LinkTheater HD and H.264
« on: October 04, 2008, 02:06:25 AM »

can anyone please list file information of the H.264 specs that are giving you good results. I am having a difficult time getting video playback from USB devices using H.264. I can get playback if I encode in MPEG4 or Xvid. I have been using handbrake for windows to convert the dvd files.

not working with the following.
container                 quick time/mov
video                    (0) h264 main@5.1
bitrate                   999 kbps
res                         640x480
fps                        29.98
audio                    mpeg-4 aac lc
bitrate                  92 kbps
                           441000

Have tried various adjustments to resolutions and bitrates with same results. I suspect its the container but not sure which one i can use with h.264

We will try and get you a more complete list of H.264 specs to help you out with this problem.

Any more news on this? What H.264 video container can LinkTheaterHD read? I need to transcode recorded HD broadcasts from .ts files and need to know what to use. Can it use the MKV container?

To answer my own question - further tests reveal that it can see H.264 in a MKV container. (yippee!)

It would be even better if it could read transport stream (.ts) files as recorded from broadcast TV by most media centers. Any chance of an later firmware update?

I was a lttle premature! Turns out that it is VERY fussy about MKV files and I cannot get it to play repackaged BBC HD TS files without transcoding the H.264. The file that worked was encoded by AutoMKV. Any more info on required H.264 spec from Buffalo would be appreciated.

This is getting silly! By a complete accident, I discovered that if I pass the (BBC HD) TS stream through 'TSPS' editor then it gets cleaned up so that it will then directly play in the LinkTheaterHD with no need to transcode or change to a MKV package. The only problem is that it seems to reluctant to see the Dolby AC3 track, but MPEG audio works fine and that is OK by me.

The next hurdle is getting it to play WTV files recorded by Windows7 Media Center!
