Anyone know Buffalo's firmware update schedule?
« on: June 18, 2013, 09:30:27 PM »

I'm the owner of two WZR-600DHP's, and I find it incredibly odd that their flagship dualband wireless router hasn't seen a firmware update in over 6 months. There are deffinitely issues, as I have to power cycle these guys on a wireless bridge at least once a week.

I am not sure even buffalo knows their firmware update schedule. the wzr-hp-g300nh and wzr-hp-ag300h, which is what i have, has not receieved an update in almost a year now. I have emailed with no response back, and i have also sent them messages on facebook as well, the response back on facebook was to email support, which i had already done, go figure...  And for the record, the wzr-600dhp isn't their flagship unit anymore, the wzr-1800h would be more considered their flagship now.

I think they are not going to work with DD-WRT anymore, that's why they stopped releasing updates. That's what I think

Your thinking is probably incorrect. The wzr-300hp, wzr-600dhp, and whr-300hp is their 'new' line of units, all still come pre-flashed with dd-wrt, as far as that goes, all of buffalo's upper tier wireless routers that have Atheros chipset all come with dd-wrt. Its their newer wireless AC unit that doesn't come with dd-wrt pre-flashed, and i don't suspect it is because buffalo chooses not to support them via dd-wrt, no - i infact believe it would have more to do with the newer AC units being broadcom chipset based units, be that as it may, there would be certain licensing issues that would follow. And they would end up having to pay broadcom big royalties for using their chip and driver with an open source styled firmware, which i don't think either party wants. With Atheros, you have open source with no problem, not so much with broadcom...

As i said, i am not sure about buffalo's release schedule on when they decide to publish builds, and really - if you think about it - with something like this it is not ever certain on knowing 'when' is a good time. Community dd-wrt builds however, get released fairly frequently, its mainly what i use.

Here's how it works, based on what I've seen: Basically, Buffalo reviews the release when it comes out via DD-WRT, and if it's stable, they'll update. Look at the "new line" N450. It uses one of the latest builds, but previous revisions do not. Personally, why fix it if it isn't broken? Seriously... I have the N450 and two WZR-300HP's, and they perform beautifully, with no need to update firmware.

Settle down, and if you want to play in the DD-WRT sandbox, go download the public build and quit crying. Buffalo dang sure didn't have to provide such well written firmware to see us griping about how often they update it. Hell, for all your griping, you'd think these were thousand dollar routers..

I may not work for Buffalo, but I've been a technician specialising in routers and Linux administration for just under ten years. I don't speak for Buffalo, or any of their employees, nor are the ideas, thoughts, etc related in any of my posts to you in any way a reflection of Buffalo Tech.

I can't speak for the other posters within this thread but... My request to buffalo for an update regarding firmware had nothing to do with a 'griping complaint'. Newer revisions of dd-wrt now have a full featured QoS - which alot of people want - also numerous wireless fixes and just fixes to dd-wrt in general. The issues regarding dropped wireless connections and having to restart units are well known to the dd-wrt community, so much so that we made it a sticky in the Atheros section of the dd-wrt forum to better give feedback regarding these issues. But that really does no good here, there isn't a feedback post specifically regarding buffalo dd-wrt for covering these types of issues. Most people here won't have the know how to switch back and forth between buffalo and community dd-wrt builds, and further more - doing so will void their warranties. Probably not the wisest move. And for the record, i wouldn't consider the OPs post a 'griping complaint' either, inquiring on something of interest with not to many emotional overtones to the post - hardly a griping post. Constructive feedback is actually welcome in most dev communities. Just some food for thought...

good luck with dd wrt support, for the most part they dont answer and when they do its something snotty and arrogant. you can no longer access that svn directly, but from the chached copy it seemed like they were going back aand forth about masquerading breaking certain more complex functions, most of which no one uses.
