WZR-HP-G300NH not able to load/ping certain sites
« on: May 07, 2011, 05:37:43 PM »

Hey all,

I bought this wifi router recently.  I'm using the default DD-WRT v24SP2-EU-US (08/19/10) std firmware.  Everything is default except setting up the wifi security to WPA2 Personal Mixed, changing the SSID to something recognizable, and changing the default name and password of the router.

For most sites, everything appears to be working normally, but I can't connect to certain sites from Safari, Chrome, Firefox, or Mobile Safari, and I can't succesfully ping them from the terminal.  This holds true for every device on the network whether connected wireless or via ethernet.  If I bypass the router and connect a machine directly to my cable modem, these sites work as expected.

Some example sites that I can't reach through the router:

  • riteaid.com
  • cvs.com
  • bedbathandbeyond.com
  • mta.info
  • discovercard.com

I feel like the router isn't broken; I just need some custom configuration, but I'm too naive about networking to know where to start.  Can you help me out?

Who is your internet provider? It could be that your default MTU size is too high by default. You can change that to something like 1401. That is under the basic settings tab in the interface. And when you cannot connect to those pages, can you ping them?

Thanks, Jotin.  My provider is Time Warner Cable.  I changed the MTU to 1401 (and saved/applied changes) and tried again, but I'm having the same issue.

As before, I cannot successfully ping domains from the terminal that the browsers won't load.  Most sites work fine.

Below is a terminal session from after I applied the change:

I would try downloading the DDWRT firmware from out site and flashing it again so it is reinstalled. Then reset the unit. By default it should not block you from any websites. Are you able to access these sites when directly connected to your modem?

Jotin, the sites that I listed load and behave normally when I bypass the router and connect a device directly to the modem. I'll try reflashing the firmware and test again.

I successfully flashed with the latest firmware and reset the router.  No change.  Another site observed not to work through the router: orbitz.com.  Could this be resolved with OpenDNS?

I assumed that the router wasn't broken; now I'm not so sure.

OK, I tried using option 2 for setting up OpenDNS as outlined in the DD-WRT wiki.  No change in behavior.  I read somewhere online that using OpenDNS might positively impact a problem like mine.  I just wanted to rule that out as a possible solution.

I would try the friendly version of firmware and see if that resolves the issue. And if it doesnt I would then try using the router in the off position with a wired conenction and see if you can connect to those sites.
