WZR-HP-G300NH Reset while copying files
« on: April 24, 2011, 06:29:39 AM »

Hi there

I have a problem with my WZR-HP-G300NH.
When I try to copy files to USB drive (connected to router) the router resets itself after few minutes during the copy operation.

My setup is as follows:

Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH
- Firmware Ver.1.77 (R1.02/B1.06)
- Reseted to factory settings (wireless WPA2-PSK AES set after that)

Desktop computer
- Windows 7, 64 bit
- Wired to the router
- Intel network adapter (on MSI 975X Platinum motherboard) with latest drivers

Laptop
- Samsung NC10
- Ubuntu linux 10.10
- WLAN connection to the router

Verbatim USB HDD
- Model # 47645
- 500GB
- USB 2.0
- USB powered
- Formatted to XFS with router

Router resets within a minute when I am copying files to the shared disk.
It actually does reset, I can confirm it from status leds, wireless and wired network dropping at the same time and afterwards router log displaying a boot sequence messages.

I can reproduce this reset when copying files from Windows or from Ubuntu.
The whole copy operation takes around 25 minutes, normally router resets after one or two minutes, once it survived twenty minutes before rebooting.

Any ideas what I should do to solve this problem?

Thanks,
-- Seppo

Hi

Actually those were my first steps ;)

Router has latest firmware and factory settings were set. Still it resets every now and then.

Now I am wondering if the HDD is sometimes taking too much power from USB and that causes router power to drop just enough it to reset.

This would be easy to test with another HDD, which I do not have...

Is there any way to see router logs before reset? It seems to always clear old log file on bootup.

Yep, this is weird.

One curious thing I noticed was that when I used my old settings the router crashed much more frequently.

Software settings do seem to have some impact...

This is what I did:

- Router (ver 1.74) crashes within 2 minutes, when using HDD (fat32)

- Format HDD to XFS with router, still resets often

- Update firmware to 1.77, still resets often

- Take backup of router settings

- Do factory reset (bootup, press and hold the small button on the bottom of the device)

- Reconfigure wireless

- Router crashes within 20 minutes when using HDD

So software does something for this, now it takes much longer before crash.
