WHR-G300N as access point with ethernet connection
« on: July 28, 2010, 09:26:05 am »

I recently purchased the WHR-HP-300N, and have a question about connecting it to a WHR-G300N. I have a computer that's about 20-30 feet from the router. I have a wireless usb adapter but it doesn't work that well, so I thought I would look at another option. The WHR-G300N can act as an access point correct? So could I connect  the G300N to the HP300N and connect my desktop to the G300N via a ethernet cable? Basically I want the G300N to act as my 'wireless card' for the desktop that is 20-30 feet away from the HP300N that's connected to the modem, so I thought this option would be better than buying a usb stick. But I want to make sure I can connect that desktop via an ethernet cable to the access point, the G300N. Thanks!

this is what i'm trying to do, not sure what it's called, but curious if i can do something like this. Router #1 is the WHR-HP-300N and #2 is the WHR-G300N

Both units need to support WDS.

The HP-G300n does.

The WHR-G300N, there are two versions. look at the model number on the sticker, if it has "V2" after the model number then it will work.

you if find out that they are compatible let me know and ill give you step by step instructions.

PM me for TFTP / Boot Images / Recovery files  LSRecovery.exe file.

I haven't purchased the G300N yet, as I wanted to make sure this would work. Is it safe to assume that any of these units I buy new now would be V2?

Also, is this WDS going to work with my WIreless N network?? Or will I have to switch to G?

I've read that WDS 'halves' the data rate. Could I do this is a bridge instead?

WDS will work in N mode if you set your encryption to either WPA PSK AES / WPA2 mixedmode.

WPA PSK TKIP will only give you A/G

WEP will not work at all for WDS.

PM me for TFTP / Boot Images / Recovery files  LSRecovery.exe file.
