WZR2-G300N - wireless clients cannot access the LAN
« on: June 18, 2010, 04:22:53 PM »

I have a WZR2-G300N router connected to my LAN via one of the LAN ports and I have a wireless client connected to the wireless network on the device.

I can ping the WZR2 IP from the wireless client

I can ping the WZR2 IP from the LAN

I cannot ping the LAN from the wireless client

I have tried this with the router disabled (via the switch on the back of the device) as well as enabled with the same results

I have configured a default gateway with the same results (shouldn't matter because the device should be a bridge here)

I am using firmware 1.00_1.26 which is, I believe, the latest

Any thoughts on what might be going on?

Thanks!

What is the first part of MAC addresses of your devices?

I have exactly the same problem, and it looks like it only manifest itself for devices whose MAC address starts with anything other than "00".

MAC on my iPhone starts with "7C" and I can't access or ping a wired network resource. But when I spoofed the MAC to start with "00" everything worked correctly.

Looks like a bug in the router.

I've been frustrated by this problem for at least a year now, it makes the device half unusable. Updating to firmware v1.52 didn't help.

I just tried connecting to a machine on LAN with four different wireless devices:

- MAC C0-.. failed

- MAC 58-.. failed

- MAC B4-.. failed

- MAC 00-.. succeeded

Nice catch! It indeed seems the problem connecting to LAN through the WZR2-300N by wireless clients might have to do with their MAC addresses.

Buffalo, any chance this might get fixed?

I just wrote Buffalo tech support about the problem, referring them to this thread. Will update when I hear back from them.

Wow, that was fast! I received a reply from Buffalo tech support today:

> It does indeed seem to be the case with this router regarding the MAC
> addresses of wireless clients giving issues for accessing the LAN resources.
> What is unusual is this is the first time it has been reported to the EU
> helpdesk.

They also noted that the US and Europen models of the router differ. Mine is the European model, not sure which one the earlier posters had. After providing tech support some more details, they replied:

> I have forwarded this information to the Product Specialist to be investigated

> and as soon as I have any updates I will let you know.

Here's hoping Buffalo's product specialists are as fast as their tech support! :-) Case ID is 122011, in case someone wants to refer it.

Well done! I never thought this model is still supported, so actually started looking for a new router (from a different vendor).

Mine is from US.

Will contact support as well and refer your case ID.

Just received the following e-mail from support:

> issue with the Product specialist to be investigated. He has

> confirm that the issue is down to a bug in the firmware in relation

Again, good work Rivashin for spotting the relation to the client's MAC address. Maybe we don't need to upgrade our routers after all :-)

Well done lompolo!
I wasn't so lucky: Justin from US support said he has never came across such an issue and suggested to reflash the router :(
It looks like he couldn't be bothered to read this thread as well (I provided the link in my report)

Well that sucks. The e-mail from support I quoted (by "Mary") seems to confirm that *both* the US and EU models have the same problem:

Perhaps reply to them and note that the US version problem has already been confirmed by their support?

I haven't received any new info from support about the issue and I'm not sure if I realistically should expect a fix for the problem for such a old device (even though the problem has been there since it was a young device). Just got a new tablet and would really like to access storage server on the LAN. Perhaps I'll give it another week or so, and then start looking for a new (non-Buffalo) router.

I've just come across your thread....  I also have a WZR2-G300N router, and it's been preventing some devices from connecting.  I've previously used 30 devices with it over the years - and all those had MAC addresses that start with 00.  My son's new laptop won't connect - and it's MAC address didn't start with 00;  Dell changed the wireless card to another brand - and that won't connect either.  It's MAC doesn't start with 00.

I'm trying to persuade EMEA tech support of this issue - they're telling me to get Dell to fix the laptop!  They don't believe the MAC address issue!  Maybe I need a lawyer :-(

When I pressed the point, Christian from the Buffalo EMEA  Helpdesk came back (today 27 April) with:

Indeed this has been spotted in our firmwares already. This has been escalated to the Development team a week ago. It will take a bit of time for them to spot the fault and fix it.

For the time being I am afraid we will need to wait on them to fix this for us. At the moment we unfortunately do not have a time line for firmware release.

Just received a new firmware "wzr2-g300n_1.55_1.02_eu.enc" from Buffalo support that should have the issue fixed. Will test later tonight and update here.

Just installed the 1.55_1.02_eu firmware I received from Buffalo support earlier today to my EU version of the WZR2-G300N, and LAN access now works from a device with MAC address starting with F4. So at least for EU devices the problem seems to be solved.

Amazing work from Buffalo getting an old device such as this fixed in just three weeks time. Thank you! And again, good job Rivashin for figuring out that the issue was with the MAC address!

Is there any news on a US version of this fix?  Any idea what would happen if I found and applied the EU version to my US router?

Thanks!
