Linkstation pingable but seems invisible
« on: September 19, 2008, 11:23:26 AM »
Linkstation gigabit NAS was working fine, then access to the browser setup stopped responding.  I reset the linkstation and the navigator finds it, but it's still not accessible via browser setup and when I tried to run the firmware updater it says no linkstation on the net.  ALl firewalls were off during this process.  Ideas?

When you run the nas navigator does it display a work group and an IP address?

There was no workgroup visible, but there was an ip address.  However, in the meantime things have gotten worse.  I ran the firmware installer and it hung at the last, the fan stopped working and now it just beeps and the red light blinking code is for a fan problem...  Have no clue what's going on now.

Power off the unit, then hold in the reset button when booting up the unit, this will force it into an emergency mode.  Try running the firmware again, if it does not take then I would call tech support 866-752-6210

Well, it's running in emergency mode...  But it doesn't seem to be taking an address from the DHCP server.  Does it use its own assigned ip address?  If so, what is it?

It could be running back at its internal Ip address of
192.168.11.150.

Plugging the device directly into the nic card of the computer and setting a static to the Local area connection of 192.168.11.151 with a default subnet mask should allow you to flash its firmware.

Tried that, but I think I need a crossover cable.  I changed a router to LAN ip of 192.168.11.199, and plugged my PC and Buffalo into the router.  My PC picked up an address of something like 192.168.11.100.  Couldn't ping the Linkstation and the firmware flasher didn't see the NAS either...

A cross over cable is not needed.  Your unit is not pulling an ip address, so the firmware will not be alble to find it.  I would call tech support for an RMA 866-752-6210

Is it possible to revive this thing by mounting it on a linux system (using a usb setup) and copying a new set of files into the correct partitions/directories?

It is possible but not recommended opening the drive could void the warranty of the unit.  The file structure is in XFS, so it will mount.
