How to set up a Password on a Router?
« on: November 19, 2009, 10:24:18 PM »

Hey There,

I was wondering how do you set up a password on this router? Or, how can I make it secure?

(I have a Wireless G MIMO Performance (Broadband Router & Access Point w/ High Gain Antenna)

If you could give me step by step instructions, that'd be awesome!!

Thanks!

-Jonathan

When inquiring about a product please include a model number

Ok, I believe this is what a model # is - if it isn't, please let me know what it is, and where I can find it. Sorry about not putting the model # beforehand.

Here's a couple more details:

I use a Windows XP, but other Windows Vista Computers will be on the network once I can get this secured.

I'm not quite sure what revisions are or if my router has it

I use DSL

Um, it's a pretty small network - like a home-usage one

Here is a link for the user manual that might help you. http://www.buffalotech.com/support/getfile/WHR-HP-G54-Manual_web.pdf

Thanks - I did check that out, but I wasn't sure what to put for the 13-key encryption code ... here's where I'm getting stuck on: there are four blank boxes, and below is this message:

Up to 4 WEP encryption keys can be registered, with one of them set as the send key at a time.
Input with alphametric characters and symbols when the Character Input mode is selected and,
input with Hexadecimal values when Hexadecimal Input is selected.

WEP128 is recommended for increased security.

I'm not sure what to plug into these boxes - could anyone point me to what I should plug in these boxes?

ty!

If you used Automatic Installation with
default settings, then your AirStation’s
SSID is “Buffalo”, and the encryption
is 128-bit WEP with the 13 digit key
that you specified.

The key could be for example>> ABC123def456G or 12345678910111

Hope this helps.

But the best security is wpa2-aes.

Hope this helps.

Quote
"the 13 digit key that you specified."

So, does this mean that I could make my own digit key up? Or do I find it on the bottom of the router?

Thanks a lot, Ronnie_USA!! This info is extremely helpful. :)

Hey Ronny_USA,

Thanks a ton for clarifying that! I had one last question: (btw, I'm terribly sorry for extending this topic longer than necessary)

Once you make up and plug a code in, do you need to somehow verify this on other computers? (like do you have to go onto the Router Homepage and do anything?) or is it as simple as before you connect to a network, you plug in that password?

Again, thanks a lot for all of your help - you've been awesome!

Yes you have to enter it under the wireless security tab.

Then you Must use that code for anyone wireless that try's to connect to you.

If they don't have it, it's not going to work for them.

Good Luck!!!

Okay ... I created my own 13-digit code, plugged in it, and was "supposedly" able to connect to the internet.

Yet, when I tried to connect, it wouldn't allow me. When I tried to connect on a Vista, the same problem. (btw, I'm connecting via XP, is this a problem?) Here's a few details on the router ...

It's on channel 11

Network Authentication is Open

Data Encryption is WEP

802.1x Authentication Type is None

802.1x Authentication Protocol is None

Mandatory Access Point is None

One more thing that might've thrown this whole thing off: when I plugged in the password and hit apply settings, it crashed midway through ... did this cause a problem? When I did try to log in, it worked fine, but ... yeah. :(

Ok, OS doesn't matter.

When you try and connect to your router make sure you enter the key the exact same way.

Caps, spaces, all matter

Good Luck!!!

I'm sorry for not replying sooner - Thanksgiving does that I guess ... Anyway, here's what happens:

I ensure the code is typed in, and I am able to "hook up" to the router but I still can't access the internet on my XP or the Vista ... the router even shows up on possible networks to hook up to, but when you try to connect, this message shows up:

"The security settings do not match those on the network ..." Did I do something wrong? :(

Log into the router and go to the wireless tab look at security, and make sure the passwords are the same.

You might want to enter it again into the router just to make sure. Don't for get to save it.
