WZR2-G300N and Nintendo Wii Connections
« on: April 13, 2009, 12:31:57 PM »
I have been having problems lately using my Wii and it's wireless internet connections through my Buffalo router. I have been able to "successfully" connect, however, when I go to download either the latest firmware, Nintendo channels or games that are available. I receive error messages and can not download. I am able to play games online, but just not download anything. I contacted Nintendo and ran through a series of different settings and was still unable. I took my Wii to a friends house and connected it to their wireless router with no problems. I was able to download and install the latest firmware. When I brought it back home and reconnected it; I received the same error messages. I do not believe it is a Nintendo issue, but an issue with my network. I am using Verizon DSL modem and connecting to internet using Buffalo router and PPPOE. Any help would be appreciated.

Most likely your modem is not bridged or became un-bridged. Check that with your ISP, if that's the case, bridging your modem should fix your issue.

Hi Jason, thanks for the fast reply. I don't believe my modem has a bridge mode. Verizon calls it a "dumb" modem.

It's an old Westell Infospeed B90-36R515-01, and I've had it for many years even before Verizon was formed. My telephone company was Bell Atlantic which turned into Verizon.

In that case you can try to put the IP address in the DMZ of the web interface of the aliasing.

Entering the Wii's IP address in DMZ has no effect, still receiving error messages. No difference.

I currently do not have any firewall settings turned on, Nintendo had me turn it off and I haven't yet turned them back on. I do have WPA2-PSK AES which is supported with the Wii. I am running in BGN mode on channel 1.

Also, I do not believe it's a reception issue, as I moved the router and modem right next to (within 1 foot) the Wii and still received the error messages.

If you've put the IP of the wii in the dmz and you're still having trouble it's unlikely to be an issue with the router itself, especially since everything else works on all other devices. Go to the WAN section of the Diagnostic tab and paste the information here.

Hopefully, this is the right info you needed. I was just on the phone with Nintendo tech support (again 3rd time) and ran through a bunch of different settings, and we determined that it's probably not a Nintendo issue and it is operating correctly. So, if it's not a router problem then I am guessing it's a Verizon DSL problem? Thanks.

In trying to locate the problem, I unhooked the router and connected my pc directly to my DSL modem. Wow, what a difference in speed!

I ran a speed test at speakeasy, and it stated a 2870Kbps download. When I connect through the router I receive around 1200-1500 Kbps down.

Another thing I noticed is that when connected to the router my downloads seem to stall, when trying to download a clip from YouTube I usually have to pause the video and wait for it to catch up. This is not the case when I am connected to the modem there is no noticable stalling.

Is this typical performance I can expect frommy router?

OK, so it is definitely the router. I dug out and hooked up my old 11.b Speedstream (ss2623, I forgot I even had this) router. Not only did my Wii connect and download properly; I tested my download speed and I am consistantly gettining 2800+ kbps. Right where I should be. I also haven't experienced and "stalls" or dropouts.

So, I guess I'm in the market for a new wireless router and it won't be a Buffalo product. Sorry!
