Download speeds with WZR 2-G300n
« on: February 19, 2009, 01:55:18 PM »

Hi all,

I am having some major problems with consistent downloads using this router.

I'm on a DSL 3mb/750 plan. When I am connecting through my router I get speeds:

292/699

However, when I connect directly to my modem bypassing the router completely I get:

2296/695

I am connected to LAN port and I have WPA2-PSK on, with 1.00_1.26 firmware. It also affects wireless connections, but I haven't tested for actual numbers.

Why are the speeds so far off? Thanks in advance!

That's... really strange. Have you tried the hardwired connection to the router?

Are you using PPPoE or DHCP for the internet settings? What's the internet ip address in the diagnostic section of the interface?

Yeah, I thought it was strange too and I just figured it was an ISP problem.

The speed that I gave you are from a hardwire connection from the router, I get a relatively similar download speed on a wireless connection. Sometimes I get speeds of around 800 down depending on day. I've also tried different ports with no significant change.

I am connected via PPPoE through the router and connected to an older model DSL "dumb" modem (it is strictly a connection point only, no routing capabilities) The router handles DHCP for my network.

IP Address 151.197.249.144(Via PPPoE)

IP Subnet Mask 255.255.255.255(Via PPPoE)

Default Gateway 10.7.98.1(Via PPPoE)

DNS Server Address : Primary 71.242.0.12(Via PPPoE)

DNS Server Address : Secondary 71.252.0.12(Via PPPoE)

copied from Diagnosis Screen

Thanks

I would try resetting the router, then reupdate the firwmare.

I reset the router to factory settings, then I reinstalled the firmware 1.00 1.26 as requested. (I actually re-downloaded it again from Buffalo, then installed.)

I am still getting download speeds anywhere from 280kbs to 900kbs (it fluctuates drastically)

the uploads still look good, it is just the download speed so no major improvement. I'm guessing it might be a bad router?

That's really doubtful, but I can't think of anything else to try. Could you post the brand and model number of your DSL modem so I can pass the info along to our corporate office? We may be seeing a bug in the firmware. If possible, try the router on another internet connection to see if the problem is specific to your connection.

If all that is for naught, call our support line to set up a warranty replacement.

It's an older model DSL modem, it is actually labeled BellAtlantic Infospeed. (Pre-Verizon) I've had it for many years.

It's a Westell B90-36R515-01 Rev. F

I previously had a Zyxel B-2000 router that was 802.11b and I don't remember having this speed issue, but then I had a slower DSL connection and a slower wireless network which is why I upgraded to the Buffalo N.

I'll see if I can test on my neighbors connection and post back. Thanks for your help.

Well, this is interesting. I wasn't able to test my router at my neighbors yet. But I was able to borrow a different router and test my connection with it.

I was able to borrow the same exact router from a friend (WZR2-G300n) When I tested speeds the results were exactly the same as when mine was connected.

About 280Kb/s down and 680Kb/s up

Two identical routers produced the same results, I am going to try them on a different connection still and report back.

Try to use dr. tcp (search Dr TCP.exe from the dslreport.com, and download the file) to change the twicking on your computer.  Set the tcp at 38888888.

After making the suggested changes to the tcp receive, using dr tcp resulting no difference. I still have around 280Kb/s down sometimes as high as 900Kb/s

Disable the security setting and play around with the Stream Engine and WISH function under the wireless configuration to change the speed of the router.  Run the upload/download test with the Speed Easy tester for the best upload/download speed.

Bare in mind that using wireless connection always lost a big trunk of upload/download speed.

I'm not sure what Stream Engine or WISH functions are, I don't have those things listed in my config.

I did try to tweak the MTU settings and increased to speed to just over 1000Kb/s but it still kinda up and down. Using a Speakeasy tester.

I understand that a wireless connection would be slower, but as I mentioned these slow download speeds I get are from a wired connection to the router and not when directly connected to the DSL modem.

Maybe this is the best I can do?

There are few adjustment to change the speed:

1.  select the connection mode G/n or g/b/n or auto

2.  select either 20Mhz or 40Mhz or auto

3.  enable/disable the QOS

I woulld reset the router and start from the beginning without any security setting and configuration.  Just change the setup one thing at a time til you can find the max speed.

With the help of another forum, I was able to crank the speed up to about 1500 - 2100 kbps.

DrTCP didn't work so I used a different program CableNUT to change settings and a few other tweaks bumped up the download speed.

It's not the greatest but it's a lot better than before, it seems it was not my router.

Thanks for everyones help!

Yes, it is the TCP limit of the Windows operating system.  Windows limited the TCP transfer speed from the router.
