Active Directory Issue
« on: February 13, 2009, 12:09:15 PM »

We received our TeraStation Pro and updated the firmware to v1.33. The upgrade was successful and we can access the box through the web interface to change the name and add it to Active Directory. After we added the box to the domain, we can see it on our domain controller as a new object but when we go into the web interface and the Group Management section, the Domain Group List shows "Acquisition failure". We removed it from the domain and added it back, but we have the same issue. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Justin

How many users are in your active directory?

And I mean in the whole of the AD forest, not just your section of the domain, if this is a child domain.

We have roughly 5,000 users total.

That's the problem, the TS can't really store more than 1,000 AD users. How many of those 5,000 are you really trying to set permissions for?

Oh, I had no idea. We will most likely only need to set permissions for 10-20 users at the most.

To setup permissions using those 10-20 users' AD credentials, try the following steps.

  1. Under Network->Workgroup/Domain, select Workgroup and put acheckmark in the "Delegate Authority to External SMB Server", "UseWindows Domain Controller as Authentication Server", "Automatic UserRegistration", and "Authentication Shared Folder" and enter therequired information.
  2. The "Authentication Shared Folder" option will create an openshare. Have the domain users that are to access the unit login to thatshare. This will register those users on the Terastation.
  3. Afterwards, you can set Access Restrictions on the sharesusing those users. The users will be the actual domain users, so if youchange the password in AD, it will change for the unit.

Thank you again for your help. The box is working very well now with the access restrictions. We do not require that many admin accounts, just 10-20 external user accounts, but it seems you must create the admin accounts, then convert them to external users. Just an extra step, not sure why, but it's no big deal. The GUI works great and is easy to use and we are very happy with this product.
