Windows 7 PC can't see Linkstation Quad - LS-QL/R5 (8TB)
« on: September 06, 2012, 05:46:18 PM »

I have recently set up a new Windows 7 PC and am having trouble getting it to see my Linkstation Quad.  My other Laptops running Vista and Windows 7 can both see the Linkstation.

When I go into network sharing centre, I can't see the linkstation and it's not possible to connect it as a network drive.  I can however navigate to the drive in a browser by entering the IP address.  I can also use DLNA to play videos / music stored on the device.

Any ideas?  I'm seen some solutions around suggesting I need to make changes to a local security profile - I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium however and this is only supported on Ultimate.

I'm about to tire this NAS, but just need to get the data off it.

Many thanks.

Do you, perchance, have a Homegroup?

[edit]

Whoops, premature posting syndrome

The SMB (Samba) Server on the linkstation is kinda old, claiming to be Version 3.0.30 , and well, Samba prior to 3.2.x really doesn't support Windows 7 due to the Homegroup and Server 2008 extensions MS made.

http://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Windows7

But, that doesn't help us much, except tell us this is a old problem,

http://www.linuxplanet.com/linuxplanet/tutorials/6911/1/

Tells how to set a policy to turn encrypted passwords off

Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Local Security Policy

Local Policies - Security Options

Network security: LAN Manager authentication level
Send LM & NTLM responses

Minimum session security for NTLM SSP
Disable Require 128-bit encryption

If you can't do a Policy, like your using a Windows Home Edition, then try these registry settings:

###################################################################
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa] "LmCompatibilityLevel"=dword:00000000[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa] "forceguest"=dword:00000000[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\MSV1_0] "NtlmMinClientSec"=dword:00000000[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\MSV1_0] "NtlmMinServerSec"=dword:00000000

###################################################################

Then hopefully your Windows 7 will communicate with SAMBA or previous versions of Windows Share without problem.

Yes, I do.  Does that make a difference and should I turn it off?

edited my first reply, I didnt mean to post the one line answer, and turning Homegroups off may do it, but I've found it to be like a poision, that forever prevents a machine from talking NON Microsoft SMB/CIFS

The registry settings did not fix the problem unfortunately.  Any other ideas?

OK basic networking time.

What workgroup is the Linkstation in

What workgroup is the PC in

Can you ping the IP address of the linkstation

Can you ping the linkstation by it's name?

Can you open the linkstation  blind, using the start menu, buy framing the ip address as a smb share

I.E. start, search \\192.168.1.2\shares or whatever you linkstation's address is.
