LS-WXL Second Drive won't initialize
« on: December 09, 2011, 12:32:52 AM »

I have a LS-WXL LinkStation Duo running Firmware 1.54

I have two 1TB drive in the LinkStation.  The drives work fine when they are inserted independantly, but when they are both inserted at the same time, the LinkStation refuses to recognize the second drive.

Both hard drives have been formatted while in the LinkStation with XFS.

Disk two says that it is removed, however I can assure you that it is in and firmly seated.

It would be nice if it works this way, but no.

In order to mount the second disk, you need to format (and delete the data).

Drives are not supposed to be removed as USB flash memory.

What do works is to replace the disks in sets of two.

They are both brand new freshly formatted disks with no data on them.

It just looks like it wont initialize the second disk when both are inserted.  Is there a special procedure to get it to initialize?

It should work exactly the way you are trying.

It is maybe a hardware issue, for example a SATA interface problem.

I suggest, try to reinstall the firmware and reset to factory defaults.

Thanks for the reply.  I thought I was doing something incorrectly.  I'll try the firmware, good idea.

Francopacks, did you ever manage to solve this?

I've got this exact same problem with my LS-WVL. Adding a second disk is pretty bog standard, so I doubt that updating the firmware and/or resetting to factory defaults is the solution. There must be something else that can be done, surely?

BTW, not sure about you Francopacks, but I'm using Shock's 1.54 mod1 open firmware. Yes, I realise that this is non-standard, but I highly doubt that Shonk has changed the parts of the firmware that handle the HDDs; ergo, I would expect to be afflicted by this same problem if I were using the official Buffalo firmware.

Yes I did end up solving it.  After troubleshooting with Buffalo tech support through email (we tried updating firmware, switching which bay the drives were in, etc), the enclosure and drive got RMA'd and sent in to be rleplaced with a working unit.  According to Buffalo support, the SATA controller was bad on the enclosure.

I was using the standard Buffalo firmware all through the troubleshooting process to eliminate the possibilty of a firmware/hardware compatibility issue.  Luckily I did not have any data on the drives or it would have been lost.
