I want to share my experience:

My Buffalo LS-W2.0TGL/R1 was dead - power blinking rapidly, disc flashing intermitedly.

Configuration: RAID 1

Booting was not possible.

Booting while holding 'funct' was not possible.

Booting TFTP was not possible.

So I decided to open the device, and attach the disk to my PC directly.

=> beware of electric shock: the power supply transformator is open, do not touch!

As I looked on the open device, I had the idea, to disconnect one of the harddrives, without removing it from the cage

- I tried disc one, and switched on the NAS: still the same error.

- I reconnected disc one, and disconnected disc two, and turned on the NAS: it worked!

The boot up takes some minutes. The device starts blinking the red light in the middle of the status display, because it notices the absence of one drive.

I was then able to freschen up my back-up and save my latest work.

At the moment my NAS is running with one disc only, I already ordered a new 1TB disk as replacement.

I will report, when I succeeded rebuilding the RAID 1.

Conclusion:

The faulty drive two in my NAS prevented the BIOS of the device from booting up at all.

The system was trying to initialize the faulty disc, and stopped there or looped infinitely.

Removing the faulty disc helped the system, to be able to start again.
