TeraStation Pro II Firmware 1.27.117
« on: September 17, 2008, 02:55:50 PM »

Hey guys,

I was on the phone with Buffalo Tech Support.....Leave a bit to be desired....

Anyway, I see that Buffalo has released a new firmware, the reason i called TechSupport was to see why they did not release an explination as to what the firmware update actually does.  Needless to say I was not happy about the hour of wasted time listening to hold music and technicians who weren't given the information about the products they're supposed to be supporting.

Does anyone know what the current update accomplishes?

Thanks in advance,

Kyle

The new firmware adds to the length of the domain name that is supported in Active directory set up, also it will allow complex characters for the admin password.

I was hoping this update would have fixed our horrible throughput...

Have you tried changing the Jumbo packets?

Try all the settings while timing a 1 gig file transfer.

What is your transfer speed now per gig?

Because this device has to convert the file strucures of the data to XFS, the protocol SAMBA does take some time to do this.

  • Read/Write speed should be about 3MB/Sec (That's MegaBYTES,) on a 100Base-T network, and about 7MB/Sec on a GigabitEthernet network. This speed is limited primarily by the processor inthe unit. A typical 1GB transfer should take about 5-7 minutes.
  • If you are reporting exceedingly slow performance, theunit is likely going through a thurough check of the disk array. Theunits will do this if power is cut to them, or if you change the RAIDarray properties. A scan of the array can also be performed by going to"Disk Management," then "Disk Check" in the TeraStation GUI.
  • If you are not going through a Check Disk, try updating the firmware
  • If there is not new firmware, have the forcethe firmware update. Then test the speed, with theTeraStation Plugged directly in to the PC.
Note: you willneed to set the IP of the Network Card on their computer to be on thesame subnet. The firmware force should set the TeraStation's IP back tofactory default, so use a 192.168.11.X address.

Paul, the above speed was done over a Gigabit network...

I'm running a Check Disk currently.

What will running the firmware help if all it does is allow a longer domain name, and more complex passwords?

I did a quick calculation on our throughput, it comes out to 3.01MB/s over a 1000Mb connection for our 1GB transfer....This is less than 1/2 of 7MB/s.

I invite you to look at this link http://www.buffalotech.com/files/products/TeraStation-ProII_DS.pdf

It's the datasheet for the TeraStation Pro II.  This datasheet is not very "informational" for lack of a better word.  It's got several different transfer rates listed.  A High speed mode (480Mb/s)  which i assume is some sort of USB rate since this is the max speed of usb2.0 if i'm not mistaken, a Full speed mode (12Mb/s) Which i assume is the transfer rate of the "gigabit" interface, and then a lovely chart at the top of the spec sheet listing this drives speed VS a normal  10/100 device, and a USB/Firewire (which have different transfer rates), and the TS Pro II is listed at 30MB/s.  What is this speed refering to?

Hey guys,  I ran the speed test again this morning.  I'd really like to just get some sort of explanation of the firmware.  Hopefully it does more than allow longer domain names and more complex passwords.  If any of you have any info I'd greatly appreciate you letting me know.

Duration              6 minutes 20 seconds

Backup Size         1GB

Average Speed     2.69 MB/s

Any Ideas?

Hey everyone,

I ran another test backup today after 90% of our users had logged off, wanted to just keep you updated.

Today's backup ran like this:

Duration                7minutes 42seconds

Backup Size           1GB

Average Speed       2.21MB/s

Thanks,

Kyle

This thread has somewhat died, however, I wanted to add a question as I too am interested in the throughput question.

According to an earlier reply in this post, Paul stated that the transfer

rate should be about 7 GBps on a gigabit network.   The reply does not

explicitly state it but I assume that is for a TeraStation II (as this is

the thread base).

However, according to KB#000107-Terastation Transfer Rates, the transfer rates on a gigabit network should be up 38 GBps (300Gbps) on TeraStation Pro II (and 8 GBps on a TeraStation).

So, which is it ?     I'm experiencing about 8GBps (T-II on gigabit) and

want to know if I should be trying to improve this or am I already at the

limit ?

Thanks !

I'd all but given up on getting an answer from this forum.  I think you're using GB instead of MB, and Paul...It appears stevejohnson is a spammer, so do your thing.
