I've followed, unfollowed, and refollowed the setup instructions for web access until I'm blue in the face. I tried to hard I almost bricked my router. I cannot, for the live of me, connect to my NAS drive (via IP address OR BuffaloNas) from computer outside my network.
I have a LinkSys WRT54GL and a Buffalo LinkStation Live 2TB. I think my problem may be that I'm not sure what PORT FORWARDING or "opening" a port is. I'm a network idiot.
I do, however, have BOTH ports 9000 and 35077 (what the linkstation software says is my "external port," with UPnP enabled) set, in the Linksys' Applications & Gaming > Port Range Forward screen for application NAS, start/end, protocol=both, address = 101 (the IP of my NAS drive) and ENABLED = on.
Do I have to turn off the router's firewall? Do I *HAVE TO* have a static IP for my router (because I'm on Comcast, and really don't want to pay).
What am I missing, please?
Are you able to access to your share folders using Web Access within your local network?
Yes!
I don't know how to get a local image/screen shot into a message on this board.
NAS address = 192.168.1.101. My IP with Comcast is dynamic.
Webaccess service
Volume "Share" has attributes of Read & Write, and its Webaccess settings are "Use inherited..."
WebAccess service = enabled
HTTPS = disabled
Use BuffaloNAS = enabled
DNS Hostname = blank
UPnP = enabled
External port = 35077
NAS Internal Port = 9000
Exclusive session = disabled
Expiration time = 30
On my Linksys WRT54GL admin page, I'm assuming that what I see (under Applications & Gaming) called "Port Range Forward" is where I set port forwarding.
My application name = NAS
Start = 9000
End = 9000
Protocol = Both
Ip address is 196.168.1.101
Enabled
Same settings for port 35077
I also have the option to set "port triggering," on the linksys. Do I need to? It didn't seem to do anything...
Under the Administration > Management tab on the Linksys, Route Router access is disabled, and UPnP is ENabled.
What else do you need, to help me?
Thanks
Still cannot use BuffaloNas.com to access my files.
Today, cannot even access it.
Anyone?
Dude, come on! Read my post. I realize I may have port forwarding issues -- I asked for help in resolving them.
Internal and external ports on the NAS need to be 9000
On the modem leave the trigger blank
Remove the 30577 port forward
let me know how you get on.
Sorry for the delay in updating this.
Did all recommended steps. www.canyouseeme.org can see me at port 9000.
Buffalonas.com , however, still cannot connect to me.
I do NOT have a static IP address from Comcast. Does that matter?
This is extremely frustrating. I'm following directions, but am still not able to access my Linkstation from outside, so I can't share anything on it!
PM me your buffalonas.com name and i can test it
Thanks to Davo, I figured out that my work network was getting in the way...
you're welcome
From my experience, if you have the port forwarding set up per the recommendations, then the next thing to figure outis how to pass your public IP address from comcast's gateway to your router. For most typical Internet providers with gateways, the private ip doesn't go to the router. so the buffalonas.com search doesn't ever get to your router to forward to the nas.
Ok I was following this thread as I am in the exact same situation, but the talk became private and I don'tknow how the issue was resolved. Any help? Can't access my NAS via webaccess. forwading issue perhaps, but what should I put in Internal and external port?
I still cannot access it from outside, either. I don't know if I'm missing some instructions on port forwarding, or if I'm only testing from places with firewalls that are causing me trouble... I'm just a home user who bought a device that was advertised to be able to do something -- I just need straightforward instructions on getting this to work!

Again, your port forwarding is either not setup or not setup correctly. contact your router provider and get them to forward whatever port you are using for web access for TCP to the local IP address of the Linkstation!
Rule of Thumb: If its working locally but not remotely it is 99% of the time down to the port forwarding.
Okay, maybe I have no business owning a NAS if I don't know what this means -- but are you suggesting that I contact Linksys to ask them what settings to put into my router setup? Somehow, I'll bet they're going to be less than really interested in helping me, with that, but if that's what you say I need to do, I'll try...
Isn't there ANYONE else here with Comcast cable service and a Linksys WRT54G router who can provide the settings?
Finally, how do I know what port I am using for web access for TCP? I'm not sure what you mean by that (maybe if I were at home looking at the settings it will be apparent?)...
This is frustrating to me because I DO have some very limited exposure to networking (and I'm still horribly confused by this) -- but what if I didn't?

Log onto the web admin page of the unit, Extentsions -> Advanced web access settings, the external port is listed there.
You can test to see if the port is open by going to http://canyouseeme.org and enter your port number.
How to port forward on your router -> http://support.herefilefile.com/entries/175488-how-to-forward-ports-on-a-linksys-wrt54g
P.S Google is your friend! :-/
I'm a googling fiend, but have found nothing, yet, that helps me. I *am* able to see my port using canyouseeme -- tried that previously. I'll try the link you provided, next (when home). Thanks.
Emkay, I think we are soulmates in so far as this problem is concerned. I am of the same opinion and problem. I checked in canyouseeme and it said my port timed out. So this is a ISP issue? I can't do aything on my end to make linkstation work?
I wish Buffalo was more straightforward in warning buyers that its web access wont work all the time depending on the ISP
I am not a techie myself, so if I were to write my ISP, what exactly should I ask them to do?
