: how to - stream linkstation pro to xbox 360 without having a pc on all the time
: homer15 January 17, 2009, 12:51:36 PM

this is just one solution i found for connecting a xbox 360 to a linkstation without having a pc on all the time.  i have a LS-WTGL/R1.

setup a windows media center edition pc (how you to do that is not listed here.  try google), and connect to any shares on the linkstation.

connect the xbox up to the media center edition and go into any of the media options and add the linkstation share.  it'll start to poll for any media on the drive, but you don't have to wait for that to finish.

exit out of media center extender, and shut down the media center machine.

go to picture, video, or music library on the xbox.  the linkstation should now show up as a valid pc.  before you select it as an option, though, you have to login to the web interface for your linkstation.  go to media server, and the xbox is now listed as a valid dlna client.  select which share contains your media files, and click apply at the bottom of the page.  on the xbox, you should now be able to browse through videos, music and pictures on the linkstation.

note:  since you are only allowed to select one folder as your media server share, you must have all your music, video and pictures in that share.

i've repeated this with my xbox and linkstation 3 times, and it is working on my friend's linkstation and xbox as well.  these same steps don't seem to work using windows media player or zune software.  the pc always needs to be on for those, it seems.

good luck

Am i missing something (i have a LS-CH1.0TL) with ethernet to a switch, same as xbox and same as pc. all see each other on network and media setting in the linkstation points to folder with all my media type files in and xbox sees all the contents in media folder whether pc is on or not.

Maybe i missed what you are trying to do or maybe its an xp thing or something. I never use xbox as media center extender its just a pain

apologies if i've missed the point altogether

It's definitely more picky than alot of other media extenders. I had both my PS3 and 360 on at the same time, and while the xbox saw all my files the directory structure was all messed up. This was with TVersity mind you, not a linkstation though.

i was just having a hard time getting it to work.  my xbox would not see the linkstation at all.  when i would use windows media player or the zune browser, it would stream but only while the pc was on.  i knew there must be a way to get it to work without a pc, but when i came to this forum and did a search, everyone said it wouldn't work without there being a pc on at all times.  so i posted the solution that made it work for me.

i agree, media center extender is a pain.  i prefer browsing straight from the built in xbox libraries.  the search feature would be nice, but i'm not complaining.

Well after your post i had to check myself just in case i'd always had my pc on when using xbox to view video stored on the Buffalo.  But it was working ok with pc off. And like you i just use the xbox video/pics/music menus and don't bother with media centre as it doesn't like a lot of video i have anyway. i just make sure if i have a lot of videos of one programme (eg prison break) its in its own folder in the Buffalo so don't have to scroll through loads of stuff to get to what i want.

I got this working. Thank you very much. Question, I can't seem to get it to update new files when I add them to the Pro Duo.
I tried forcing an update and initializing a new database, but I can't get the new files to show.

Any thoughts?

Also, I can get the XBOX to play MP4's off a USB drive, but the same file won't run from the linkstation pro duo.

What if you don't have a media center PC though?
Anyone got a suggestion?

i won't tell all the steps how to do it, but i don't have a media center pc either.  i set one up on a virtual machine temporarily.  again, check google to see how to set one up temporarily.

If you don't have a windows media center PC, download the program TVersity, it functions as media center in regards to streaming video/audio/picture files from a computer to a 360, and also has a couple pretty cool options (youtube on 360, hulu on 360 with the paid version, and my personal favorite on the fly transcoding for converting files that usually won't play on a 360.

I have tried the method from the first post, and although my pictures are now viewable directly from the NAS to the Xbox (no media center required), I still cannot view music or videos. Any tips?

I have the Linkstation Duo 2TB LS-WX2.0TL/R1 and am for some reason unable to start twonky at the IP:9050 address. What am I doing wrong??

I have LinkStation Pro LS-XHL which is connected to my wireless router.

Up until yesterday I had no trouble streaming movies/music/pictures from my LinkStation Pro LS-XHL with my xbox360, without my PC turned on either.

The LinkStation just looked link a PC to the xbox. But yesterday xbox wanted a dashboard update and after that update the xbox could no longer see the LinkStation.

Eventually I tried upgrading LinkStation firmware to 1.40 and after several tried the xbox was seeing the LinkStation but wouldn't stream at all.

After several LinkStation reboots it has suddenly just started working.
