: LS-WXL : LinkStation™ Duo - BitTorrent Problems
: Evernote December 02, 2010, 04:32:59 PM

Hello all,

So I've posted this before, but I'm so tired of this problem that I'll post it again, this time with screenshots.

I have a LS-WXL : LinkStation™ Duo, 2.0TB running FW 1.37, bittorent 0.37.

To make this test as accurate as possible I've loaded up the same torrent on both torrent clients.
In this case the latest episode of an anime, it has around 3000 seeds.

Please find attached first the screenshot from my PC:

Next up is a screenshot from my NAS:

I apologize the poor quality here but I stretched the images after uploading them low res.

As you can see there's a little difference between my NAS and my PC, infact I have no clue why I even use my NAS.

5.5mb/s on PC and... 3.0kb/s on my NAS

I've tried to mirror the settings from my client to my NAS hoping that would fix the problem but still it's slower then well.. slow.
Both the PC client and the NAS are portforwarded thus should be working fine.

What I also noticed is that the NAS can only see 10% of the total number of seeds, can anyone explain this?

I hope anyone can help me on this because I just feel like crying...

Could you email me that torrent file? I'll give it a try and see what I get. I have the same unit with me right now on that firmware.

On uTorrent setting.
Change port on NAS to the same port in the PC (or use 58500).
Set port forwarding on your router to NAS IP address.

@ Jotin,

Please find a link to the torrent file below:

http://www.nyaatorrents.org/?page=download&tid=177255

Please let me know how this works for you,

Evernote

--------
Thaitawat, is there any reason why you are using this port? (58500)

I have used the same port on my NAS as I have on my PC and it was tested seperately and portforwarded to my NAS.

Will let you know how it works when I modify the port.

I remoted into my pc at home and that torrent is downloading at 600k. I'm running 1.37 firmware and it seems to be downloading all right. When its finished I'll see if I can open it and such.

@ Thaitawat: I've set the port to 58500 port forwarded the port to my NAS's IP adress and.. it still doesn't work.

Perhaps my unit is just faulty as it appears to be working for Jotin?

Any idea guys?

What you could try was doing the FAQ 2 of 5 to force flash the firmware. During that process you could also check delete user config to delete any settings you made on the unit to restore everything but the data. I would try this first before getting an rma.

Will this erase all data on my NAS?

: Re: LS-WXL : LinkStation™ Duo - BitTorrent Problems
: Jotin December 03, 2010, 12:26:46 PM

no it will not. Data and shares are not touched.

: Re: LS-WXL : LinkStation™ Duo - BitTorrent Problems

After having forcefully flashed the firmware on the Linkstation duo the problem seemed to have been fixed.

However, after I watched a video using the media server in combination with my PS3, the video stopped all of a sudden and an error appeared on the PS3:
"A media server has been disconnected"

So I restarted my NAS and tried to use the media server again, this time it was working fine and I was able to watch the whole video.

When I wanted to download some more videos I realised that once again the speed on the BitTorrent client on my NAS has completely dropped and I can't get it to work again.

Do I need to force flash my firmware every time I use the media server??

I hope someone can shine some light on this.

*Bump*

This is really pissing me off right now, this Buffalo Linkstation Duo is useless, I can't think of a single reason to use this thing right now.

When I download using my uTorrent on my PC within 30 seconds I will downloading 6mb/s and my LS Duo.. well max speed is 0.07mb/s

Has anyone encountered the same problem before?

Is the only solution throwing this thing out in the bin?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: Out of desperation I'm erasing EVERYTHING on the LS Duo to see if that might do the trick... otherwise

Buffalo Linkstation Duo + Hammer = Dead Buffalo Linkstation Duo ---> Bin

Try resetting the unit. This will not harm any data

-Go into the web interface

-Click on System

-Click "Restore/Initialize"

-Click "Restore Linkstation"

: Re: LS-WXL : LinkStation™ Duo - BitTorrent Problems
: Evernote December 20, 2010, 09:22:37 AM

Update:

@ Sethz, this does not work.

Instead of "resetting the unit" I've erased ALL data on the unit.

This can be done by going to "System" in the Web Admin and selecting Restore/Erase.
Pick the Erase option and enter the security code and wait... well around 48 hours.
My unit went into Raid 1 however, I wanted Raid 0 so I changed that afterwards.

I've added some torrents shortly after and I'm seeing some good results, I will keep an eye on this for another few days and post an update with the results.

Update1: After a single restart of my linkstation the bittorrent client once again fails.. how is this possible?

What i've also noticed is that for example:

Random Torrent 1: 1000 Seeds 2000 Leechers

I load it up on my PC, it can see 1000 Seeds, 2000 Leechers
I load it up on my Linkstation Duo, it can see 30 Seeds and 56 Leechers

There is something seriously wrong with this thing..

Update2:

I've deleted my entire batch and restarted one of the torrents, this time it works again...

I think there is a program error on the BitTorrent client with the queue, though I am not a programmer so I am not 100% sure. It seems whenever my batch is greater than the maximum number of active downloads it fails. (because it will actually start a 6th, 7th or 8th!)

Do we have anyone else who can test this?

"I load it up on my Linkstation Duo, it can see 30 Seeds and 56 Leechers"

Please check on preference menu--> bandwidth

: Re: LS-WXL : LinkStation™ Duo - BitTorrent Problems
: Evernote December 22, 2010, 05:08:48 AM

@Thaitawat:

Global upload rate limiting

Maximum Upload Rate (kb/s) [0:unlimited] Value: 0
Alternate upload rate when not downloading: Unticked

Global download rate limiting

Maximum download rate (Kb/s) [0:unlimited] Value: 0

Number of connections:

Global number of maximum connections: Value 600
Maximum number of peers per torrent: Value 100
Maximum upload slots per torrent: Value 8
Use additional upload slots if upload speed <90%: Ticked

These options are exactly the same as on my PC, yet the download speed on my PC is 10 times higher than the Linkstation...

Did you previously enabled Quality Of Service for torrent traffic to your PC at your router?

Probably qos limiting bandwidth to your linkstation.

Also, check settings under uTorrentWebUI->Preferences->BitTorrent.

I'm using these settings and find good speed:

1. enable dht

2. enable local peer discovery

3. protocol encryption->outgoing forced

4. untick allow incoming legacy connectoins

@chankarat: I tried the below and I'm still having the same problem.

However Buffalo has finally answered:

Thank you for contacting the Buffalo Helpdesk regarding your unit.
I have addressed your issue with our specialist product and I came to a conclusion that its will nor perform the same speed as in your PC, as you may know Bittorrent always update their software with PCs to perform in a better condition, but for the LinkStation its a special software was designed for the NAS and capabale of doing certain things but not full as the PC version. So the speed you getting is fine and cannot be compared with the PC version.
If you are unhappy we can downgrade to Firmware 1.34
If you require any further support please let us know.
Regards,
Mahmoud
Buffalo Technology Helpdesk,

So, I'm gonna have to accept that my product is useless.

Thanks for the help all.

P.S: never EVER buying from Buffalo again!

Evernote, what region are you from? What email address did you get that response from?

These are USA forums, and we don't have a Mahmoud in the USA support team. Do you have a UK  or USA LS-WXL?

Jotin, I'm from Europe. The Netherlands to be exact.

The e-mail address I received the response from is:

EMEAsupport@buffalo-technology.com

drmemory, it's neither it's a European (Dutch) Linkstation.

hey Evernote,

I was having similar problems.. basically my torrents were stuck at zero seeds and zero peers etc.  The problem turned out to be the tracker - a lot of trackers listed in torrent files are offline... for whatever reason Vuze on my PC was able to use find alternative trackers automatically and pick up the seeds that way, resulting in a fast transfer speed.  The uTorrent client doesn't seem to have that functionality.  What fixed it however was right clicking on the torrent in the webUI and adding an alternative tracker manually to the list.  For example, try adding this one:

http://tracker.prq.to/announce

When I add that to my list of trackers, the torrent starts finding seeds and can transfer the files at a relatively high speed.  For that example torrent you posted I was getting something like 1 MB/s.  fyi I have a german LS-CH1.5TL-V2 running firmware 1.37.

It sounds like you have more problems going on than just not finding seeds, but I can verify that for the moment at least my linkstation bittorrent client is pulling in data at ~ 1 MB/s and easily keeping up with the PC.

hope that helps

: Evernote January 07, 2011, 03:07:59 AM

Hey wmbates,

Thank you for getting back to me on this.

However, I am using private trackers which do not have an alternative tracker and my PC's uTorrent Client is able to see all seeds and races towards 6mb/s and my linkstation will be stuck at 3kb/s and won't improve at all. Would you perhaps be able to give me a link to the torrent you've used to test this? (other than the one I posted)

I won't even bother downgrading the firmwarebecause the media server on the 1.34 didn't work.

I really hope someone can shine a light on this..

same boat here mate, crappy speeds on LinkStation and great speeds on PC ... However I USED to get great speed out out the LinkStation .. same thing, private trackers. The should put on the box that the uTorrent client built in is actually useless.. .. very disapointed. would not reccommend to anyone for this application..

ok, looks like you cant keep your old torrents seeding too long, the thing cant handle it... deleted all my seeds and now its coming down a treat.. sort of defeats the purpose tho?..

I have had a similar problem only I had 0 seeds all the time...

I have found a stupid fault made by me!

When I have changed the IP address from automatic to fix, I have forgoten to type in the

Primary DNS Server:and Secondary DNS Server:, which you have to type in order for bitorrent client.
Hope this saves somebodies troubles...
