Hi there, looking for help again from moderators for my LS-XHL Linkstation.

Instead of doing a copy and paste using our server to copy files from linkstation to ext hard drive.

I want to use the direct copy to copy selected files only from my Linkstation to my external hard drive.

This way its the linkstations processor being used and not the servers processor. This way there would be no heavey drain on our server.

How can I do this?

All I see from manual is how to copy from ext hard drive to linkstation.

Also, I unplugged the ext hard drive once already from the linkstation without dismounting as I hadn't read the manual. Have I done damage to my drive? It doesn't say on manual what is the consequence of doing this is...

Thanks in advance,

Tony

Consequences for removing a drive without dismounting can but not always include data corruption and delayed write failures (although I've only seen the latter in a Windows OS).  Furthermore, if you access the NAS and access one of your share folders you'll find a usbdisk1 folder "follows" you throughout the file system.  If you copy and paste from a folder on the NAS to the usbdisk1 folder you shouldn't be taxing your servers processor.  I think perhaps the simplest solution aside from that would be to setup a backup job to the external USB drive.  Hope this helps.

HI Dustrega,

Many thanks for your reply.

yes the usbdisk1 is showing there. And that is question. If I am using windows exlporer on a copmputer (in this case the server) and doing a copy/paste, will that not tax that computers processing power (again in this case the server)?

I'll try what you suggest and see how I go.

Thanks again for your reply.

:)

Hi there, still having read only problems from my LS-XHL Linkstation.

I updated my internet browser and set the usbdisk1 settings to read/write on the linkstations shared folders section but still when I view the folder its read only and cannot paste to it.

As my external harddrive is just a normal standard type not equiped with any protection/security software so I cannot understand why I'm still having this problem of not being able to copy/paste to it.

Any ideas to whats wrong?

please advise soon.

Thanks.
