: "is a directory" errors when copying NAS->NAS using a Mac
: jesmith August 02, 2019, 01:42:59 PM
We have a TerraStation TS5410D NAS, latest firmware 4.12-0.06

We connect a mix of Mac and Windows computers to it, using SMB protocol

For the most part, this all works great. However, often if we do this on a mac:

cp -R largefolder newplace

Several of the files in the destination will end up with a zero size, and we see the error:

some/deep/file.ext is a directory

On all of those. That is, it claims that the file it is copying TO is a directory. But what's left is an empty file. Very weird.

If we repeat the copy command, it invariably works. So it seems that the bug might be the Terrastation has trouble writing files into newly-created folders, when under load.

The Terrastation itself is reporting no errors.

The problem seems to come and go. It'll get into a mood where it's having this problem a lot, and then we won't see it for a while.

Any ideas?

The only thing I can advise is to set the SMB protocol to delete temporary files for MAC.

Also, the latest firmware is 4.40. It has to be downloaded and updated from the Buffalo website.
