: trouble reading files

Hi, any help appreciated. I have a buffalo external drive and have backed up my files to it but can't now access those files? When my friend plugs the drive into his chromebook the files are there to be explored and opened but on my computer (running windows 7) we can't view the files at all? Do I need to be using/downloading some special software because windows explorer doesn't seem to able to see the files? The files are clearly there because we can see them using the chromebook?
