: WebAccess
: salas81 January 19, 2015, 02:13:07 PM
Hi, my LS-XL needed a firmware update as it was stuck in emergency mode. Now I'm trying to configure it again, but something strange happens: when configuring Web Services Support I get this error

(http://forums.buffalotech.com/Users/ldecaria/Desktop/Screen Shot 2015-01-19 at 12.07.21 PM.png)

I'm sure about the NAS name, but maybe I'm not about the user and password. Is there a way I can reset them for the web access? Or register my NAS again, with another name?

Ah ok. So most likely you have it incorrect. Just choose a new name,

I usually say to choose a passsword that is common for you or use the new name as the password as well. What this info is for is if you ever change your unit. Recover your unit from some disaster you can be sure know one will take your name that you choose an use if for them selfs with out knowing the password.

thanks for your reply. If I go to the menu and set a new name, looks like it never ends saving the new setting (see attached image).

it's driving me nuts!

Ah ok. Disable UPNP if you have not done so. Reboot the  unit and try again. If you are still having the same issue try factory restore, should be under system, this will erase all the settings, not your data. Your data should be fine IF you hit the factory restore button. There are 2 buttons so make sure you read. Once its done try again. Seems like the firmware is acting up

Don't know if this will help with your issue, however I wasn't able to connect to the buffaloNAS.com server from the terastation to setup Remote Access. I found out from Tier 2 that I had to configure the primary and secondary DNS servers in Network settings under IP Address. Set these fields to your routers default gateway, in my case 192.168.1.1, or enter the DNS server addresses used by your ISP (you can find these by logging in to your router and looking at the router "status". Your ISP's DNS servers will be listed there. Either of these will work.

I was then able to connect to the buffaloNAS.com server to register the name for remote access. I have not been able to find this DNS configuration documented any where in the manual.

Hope this helps,

George

P.S. I say remote access, but really it's Web Access... sorry...

Thats correct you need to have the DNS servers and gateway filled out but if your unit is on DHCP those should get auto populated. you dont have to use the DNS as your routers IP. You can use other kinds like 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4 which are google dns. You just have to populate everything for it to work. Though his worked before and then it went in to EM mode and now doesn't. That would mean the unit is able to pull all the network settings correctly and his issue he is having wont be cause by network settings. His unit is not applying the settings.

Kind of sad Tier 1 could not figure this out. Its basic 101 networking... :/ tsk tsk.

no way guys... can't get this solved. If I configure the web access, when I save the setting it keeps forever with the progress indicator saying "saving data". On the other side, configuring web services access doesn't work either, as the nas is not registered at buffaloNAS.com.

looks like it can't register itself to buffaloNAS.com

should I set something in the router as well? such as port forwarding, NAT, or what?

You need to have PF setup if you cant get out. The saving issue is a firmware issue. If you want I can remote in to your pc and try a few things on Saturday. I have fixed it before plenty of times. Its just finding the right way. Sometimes its just unchecking upnp, sometimes its reverting to a old firmware or restoring the unit and then re-installing the newest firmware.. Its alil tricky. Try the port forwarding. But you cant set your external/internal ports if it isnt saving. If you would like for me to try. Message me a time on Saturday and ill provide you my email/number and the program we will use,

thanks, it would be helpful. anyway I just realized that I don't have access to my router. It's one of those "third party" routers that ISP give you when you subscribe to a service. I don't have admin right on that router, so can't configure port forwarding...
: Re: WebAccess
: georgem1956 January 23, 2015, 01:17:38 PM
Usually they don't change the default password, which is most of the time "password". put 192.168.1.1 in your browser url bar. id is either blank or admin password is usually password....you might get lucky if your isp is lazy about their modem/routers....
: Re: WebAccess
: georgem1956 January 23, 2015, 01:20:09 PM
Ok, that explains it. I disabled DHCP for the teraStations (I have 2) and used static IP's....that's why the DNS servers didn't auto populate in the network configuration.....

I've been able to configure the router, but no way with saving data... if it is a firmware bug how can I solve that? the only way is to reset the FW? isn't a new version available?

Its not really a firmware bug.. more of a issue with the firmware not installing correctly OR the unit is being stupid. Who is your ISP and what is the model of your Gateway/router. I can either tell you the username/password Or direct you on how to find it on your Gateway/Router..

georgem1956
Yep that would do it. When doing anything Static make sure you feel out everything or certain things wont work.

I realized that on buffaloNAS.com my NAS exists with it's old name, maybe that's why I can't register it with a new name. the problem is I don't remember the credential for web acces for the old account, is there any way I can reset the password?
: Re: WebAccess
: joma90 January 24, 2015, 11:18:33 AM
That won't be the problem. There just a name. The whole purpose of the name is to use buffalo nas as a dns service. For example: Instead of typing out 101.23.46.77:9000 you would type buffalonas.com/test123. It's easier to remember words vs numbers. Every site you Visit is the same there are actually ips but it would be a pain to remember all the so names are used

: salas81 January 24, 2015, 11:41:59 AM
ok I know it, but so why can't I register my NAS with a new name? and the most important thing: can I reset the password for my old access?
: Re: WebAccess
: joma90 January 26, 2015, 09:20:31 AM
Not that I am aware of. you would have to wait for them to clear the data base of non active names over X amount of days.. No idea when that is or if they even do that, but who knows you might be getting the name and password right. its just your unit being dumb. Like I said it would be much easier for me to work on it if I was able to remote in to a PC for you. Ill try a few things I know that might work. If you want you can try these, I wont go in to SUPER detail on them, more of a this -> this -> this thing

ATTEMPT 1;
Create a new user, add them to the admin group. reboot linkstation, login as the new user, go to webaccess, advance, use your settings, disable UPNP, set internal port as 9000, set external port to whatever you want. Choose a port between 2000 - 65000, Dont choose a port you are already using. See if it takes the settings. If so try to access it locally and then externally, Let me know if this worked or not and if it worked, did the external access work as well?

ATTEMPT 2:
You will need to download this firmware. Its not the newest, the newest is 1.69 which i believe you have. I want to go down a firmware version to help clear anything in the unit.
http://buffalotech.com/support-and-downloads/download/ls_series-168.zip

You will then need to follow the steps for "NEWER MODELS" on the link below, do not use there downloads. Just scroll down and follow the guide.
http://m1econsulting.com/knowledge-base/force-update-buffalo-linkstation-nas/

When you get your LSUpdater setup and have the debug window open,  Make sure all the boxes on left are checked, and then check all the boxes on the right EXCEPT FOR "REBUILD PARTITION", leave that unchecked, i REPEAT, leave that unchecked, if you check that and do the updated. Your data will be deleted. Also do not put a 0 in "NOFORMATTING" unless you don't care about your data.  If you have your data backed up already then follow ATTEMPTED 3. The unit will take a few minutes after you run the update with the options you set. After it comes up. Login, make sure your share folders are there. This shouldn't delete any data. Now go head and try webaccess again.

If none of that works follow below,

ATTEMPT 3:
Back up all your data and then do the force update but you will set "NOFORMATTING" to 0, and put a check in force update and do not check version. This will make your unit start off as if it was your first time setting it up. Create a share and setup webaccess. If it works. xfer your data back over.

Hello, i just bought my linkstation 441e, my hard drives are already set up and everything is working fine including dlna, except for the web access. I messed with some of the settings on my router and i am able to access my files through webaccess, but only while connected to my network, can anyone help me set up my router and NAS so that i can access it from anywhere? Thanks
