: Looking for help with a different kind of network setup.

Hi,

I live and travel around the US in a fifth wheel camper. While in a campground I usually have access to free wifi. I would like to be able to receive the free wifi then run it to my router and re-broadcast it over my network, this will give me access to the internet and also between my 2 laptops and my printer and network hard-drive.

I would like to explain that I do not have access to the campgrounds side of the network, so I cannot setup up my own hardware on thier system.

Here is the network hardware I currently have,  my router is a US Robotics 5641 wireless G with a print server built in. Wired to my router is my network hard drive, and my printer. I am hoping to be able to use a wireless access point to receive the free wifi, connect that by ethernet cable to my router's modem input and then use my network just as you would with a cable/DSL modem.

Is this possible? Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Rich

This is not possible without access to the wifi hotspot's hardware.

First, you need to be able to hardwire your router to the network.  If there is no hardwire network, your router do not have the cability to be used as an access point.

Second, You need to purchase a router like the Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 or WHR-G300N or WHZ2-G300 router has the access point cability to connect to the free wifi as an access point to wifi your network.

slpip, you're off the mark on your second point. Our routers can only connect to another wireless network through WDS if supported. WDS only really works with compatible routers, and you need admin access to the network to set that up.

mnraaron, the Buffalo Wireless Ethernet Converters WLI-TX4-G54HP and WLI-TX4-G300N can connect to a wireless network as a client, then pass the network through the ethernet port. To set this up with your router, connect the Ethernet Converter to the available wireless network, then hook up the Converter to your router's WAN or Internet port.
