: Buffalo external drive stopped working after MacOS 10.5.7 update.
: diablakis May 13, 2009, 07:21:09 PM

Hi!

I have an external Buffalo drive (model HD-HB300U2-EU) and after my update to macos 10.5.7 the drive does not appear on my drive list. The drive works fine on 10.5.6, vista and xp so I can assume some kind of incompatibility between the update and the drive. And it seems like I'm not the only one...

Apple discussion board

Oh and something I forgot...my other external drive (newer Maxtor 1tb) works fine after the update....

Any ideas?

Thank you!

Apostolos

Just seen your message after posting a near identical issue. There's stuff appearing now on Apple's forums about this issue so we aren't the only ones to experience it.

I'll let you know if I hear anything.

Agree my buffalo hd-hb300u2-eu also gone down dont hold my breath for buffalo releasing a firmware fix as these drives are a few years old and like most companys they have our money now stuff you.

Hope to be proved wrong.

Applese thread on the buffalo drives has had +17000 hits so a lot of people seem to be affected

We are aware of it, although we stopped producing this model YEARS before 10.5.7 came out, at least in the US.

I will pass this along, although I'm not really certain how this is a problem on our end.

Jason -

I am one those having issues, too. It appears that Buffalo USB-only drives are the ones affected since my Buffalo works on the Firewire 800 connection. My other non-Buffalo USB drives works also.

Jason

Thank you for your response. Strictly speaking, it may not be Buffalo's problem - my drive was working fine under OS X until I upgraded. That said, given that other drives work OK, I'd be grateful if Buffalo were to at least give this a quick run through to see if there's anything your end.

Thanks

Jason, any insights into a workaround for this problem would be amazing and very greatly recieved I'm sure. Thanks for putting some time and effort into it in advance!

Not sure why it's happening since at the end of the day its a plug and play device, and should be mac compatible right?

Cheers!

Certainly, although the unit is a p&p device.

At a guess, I'd say something in the update is sabotaging the USB handshake between the mac and the external HD.

EDITED to fix errata.

Thanks for that idea Jason,

I'm wondering if you can shed any light on this then perhaps instead being the hard drive expert here. In the mac system profiler the Hard Drive is just showing up as this, but is not accesible:

USB2-IDE Bridge:

  Product ID:    0x002a
  Vendor ID:    0x0411  (BUFFALO INC.)
  Version:    1.06
  Serial Number:    000007048F4E
  Speed:    Up to 480 Mb/sec
  Manufacturer:    BUFFALO INC.
  Location ID:    0x24100000
  Current Available (mA):    500
  Current Required (mA):    2

So it seems something is being seen but nothings happening, any ideas? Cheers!

"We are aware of it, although we stopped producing this model YEARS before 10.5.7 came out ..."

This would seem to fault people with using the Buffalo drives too long. An unusual tact for a company representative to take ... Shouldn't Buffalo be proud of the fact that older drives are still in use, as opposed to being critical of users?

" ...it was never stated to be officialy mac compatible"

I can't speak for the US, but in Japan they sure as heck were marketed as OSX compatible. My drive is an HD-HB250U2. It said right on the box that it was compatible with OSX. It listed the current version and followed that with an "and up".

I suppose users should be grateful that at least Buffalo has acknowledge the problem. To my knowledge Apple has been completely silent. But it certainly isn't pleasing to see users berated for using their drives too long and then being given excuses for why Buffalo won't do anything about it. Other hard drives work. These older models from Buffalo don't. What gives?

Ultimately, who cares whose fault it is? Let's see whose customer service is up to finding a solution for those dedicated users who have held on to their drives all these years.

Sigh ...

I believe you have mis-represented the facts. I have two USA purchased HD-HB series drives that I use for backups with both my Macs and a Buffalo LinkStation. I still have the original packaging for these drives (HD-HB300U2) and the box clearly says in BOLD PRINT, "Windows and Mac Compatible" with Mac OS Requirements listed as Mac OS 9, Mac OS X.

I can't say who (Apple or Buffalo) is at fault at this point, but Buffalo is clearly LYING if they claim these drives were "never stated to be officially mac compatible"

I will be happy to offer my original packaging to anyone interested in pursuing a class action suit.

Just chiming in to say that I have a Buffalo HD-HB160U2-WR that also is not mounting after updating to 10.5.7.  If Buffalo doesn't fix this or work with Apple to get them to do a fix, and soon, I doubt I will be purchasing any more Buffalo products in the future (for example, a new external drive to replace this one).  I bought this just a little over 2 years ago, and it seems like Buffalo sees our request for a fix like we are asking for repairs to a wheel on a horse-drawn carriage that it is incompatible with OS X 10.5.7.  Perhaps Buffalo needs to look at the cost of fixing this problem as a way of preventing current customers from seeing Buffalo as a company that does not care about the customer once the product is sold.

I have the same problem and I also bought my HD about two years ago in Japan. I agree, Buffalo should be proud that my HD lasted this long especially as I use it for so much. I did buy this HD because it said it was Mac OS compatable. If my HD was not meant to last two years then I will rather buy from a company where they expect their products to last

Iread no criticism or any sign of Jason "berating" our users. I see asimple statement of facts about when the product was produced.

" ...it was never stated to be officialy mac compatible"

This statement is false, and I apologize for the confusion. I've edited Jason's post to remove this errata.

Theissue itself is still unclear. No one can say for certain that this isa Buffalo issue or an Apple issue alone, and it may be a combination. We only know that the issue started with the 10.5.7 update.  We'veheard of the issues, and have forwarded as much info as we could findto our engineers. As of this moment, there is unfortunately noworkaround that we know of, but if we find one, rest assured it will beposted to this thread ASAP.

I just wanted to add a note here. According to the Apple discussion board in Japan there are now reports of users calling up Buffalo (in Japan) and being told that Buffalo Japan will fix the drive if the users pay for the expense of sending it to them. (Buffalo Japan covers return postage.) This is regardless of whether the device is still under warranty.

I understand that Buffalo US and Japan are separate, but the drives are the same, and this should be useful for a comparison.

I myself have not yet verified that Buffalo Japan is indeed doing this. But here is the link to anyone who can read Japanese. (Link)

That link leads to the right page, but wrong message. Here is a link to the first report of this:

https://discussionsjapan.apple.com/message/100502280#100502280

Others follow.

I wanted to thank all of you guys for discussing this issue. I also happen to own a Buffalo HD-h250u2 and was at a complete loss and shocked at the sudden problem of not being able to access my data on the drive after returning from a business trip. OSX had been updated on my home computer but it wasn't until today that I attempted to access my external hard drive.

I look forward to hearing updates on this issue as I (just like all of us) have to access my files.

Same problem on my end with a HD-HB2560U2-WR. Worked before 10.5.7 and still works on a 10.5.6 iBook I have.

I'm of the same opinion as others. Buffalo should at least look into this before declaring it "Not our problem".

Unless we see a fix for this. It will be the last Buffalo product I buy. I already have a Linkstation that died after 2 years of use

and the drive is now in another enclosure. One more failed Buffalo product to add to the checklist will not sit well with me.

As other have said, Buffalo should be happy to see that users are still using their product that is 2 or more years old. This should be a testament to the quality of their product that they should stand behind it to keep them working for another 2 years.

It's not as if this is a failure due to wear an tear. It's an obvious incompatibility.

I look forward to seeing a resolution to this matter soon.

Ok so decided that apple where not bothering fixing the issue so i thought i would make a workaround.
My 10.5.6 macbook could see the drive fine so decided to see if i could break 10.5.6 without doing the update to give the same error.
and here is what i found
If i installed the IOUSBMassstorageclass.kextfrom 10.5.7 using b7 kext installer after re-booting the caches would update and once it had re-booted the drive would stop working in the same way as the 10.5.7 update did.
So here is the workaround
get a copy of the IOUSBMassstorageclass.kext from 10.5.6 and back it up to a pendrive then using kext installer install he kext re-boot and buffalo drives will work again.
I dont know if this is a bad thing to do i did not get any panics or kernel errors and everything seemed to go back to normal.
So there you go apple thats the offending issue the kext now get it fixed

The file is under \system\library\extensions

scottgriz,

I don't believe we declared that this wasn't our problem. I believe I've explained our take on the issue quite well in a previous post: "Theissue itself is still unclear. No one can say for certain that this isa Buffalo issue or an Apple issue alone, and it may be a combination. We only know that the issue started with the 10.5.7 update.  We'veheard of the issues, and have forwarded as much info as we could findto our engineers. As of this moment, there is unfortunately noworkaround that we know of, but if we find one, rest assured it will beposted to this thread ASAP."

Furthermore, since the issue happened after Apple updated their operating systems, and from eddieitman's post, we can see that the issue is fixed by rolling back the USB Mass Storage Class driver, it follows logically that this indeed isn't our problem. Regardless of whose fault it actually is, we have been looking and will continue to look into this issue. Your patience is appreciated.

eddieitman,

That makes perfect sense to me. The .kext files are kernel extensions, so that file is apparently the USB Mass Storage Class driver. Looks like something changed in that driver between the 10.5.6 and 10.5.7 versions. I had a feeling this was the case, so thanks for confirming it.

That workaround is probably beyond many of our users, and may be against Apple's licensing, so we at Buffalo certainly cannot recommend it to our users before clearing it with Apple. However, we obviously can't stop them either :)

I'll forward this info up to our corporate office.

Colin,

You may not have declared it wasn't your problem, but statements coming from mods like Jason which say "I will pass this along, although I'm not really certain how this is a problem on our end. " make it sound like you are taking that stance. It may not be an official statement, but when a user comes to a forum seeking help, this is seen as a dismissal of their concern.

You then go on in this most current message to say, "I don't believe we declared that this wasn't our problem."

Well, a few lines later, you say, "it follows logically that this indeed isn't our problem."

Regardless of who's fault it is, it certainly is Buffalo's problem. I own a Buffalo device. I have complete expectation for it to work on an Apple platform as it promises to be compatible with it. If it does not work, my only recourse is to seek an alternate product.

Just remember, it puts a bad taste in users mouths when they hear a comment like, "I'm not really certain how this is a problem on our end."

I'm happy to hear that this is now being taken seriously and that it is being looked into.

Could we get some kind of timeline for a resolution to this issue?  I can only go so long without a back-up drive.  If the fix is going to be indefinite for more than another week or so, I will just need to get a new drive.  I assume this is probably true of most of the people facing this issue.  If Buffalo wants to retain any of these customers, they need to tell us when this will be resolved, not just "we're working on it".
: Re: Buffalo external drive stopped working after MacOS 10.5.7 update.
: mrsanger17 June 07, 2009, 05:30:48 PM
I am not adding new info, so I apologize for that.  But I did want to register my identical concerns and get signed up for an email on this.  I use the drive as my backup and would not expect to have to upgrade the hard drive ever few years - and I certainly won't choose a Buffalo again if this matter is not resolved fairly.  I am using the HD-HB250U2 with a pc and a mac.  It is working fine with the pc still, so I know the issue is not with the cable.

after reading this thread, i went over to apple and read their thread, which is about 10 times longer. some folks seemed to not have this problem but they didn't mention the model number. i'm wondering if it was only drives which have the usb>ide-ata bridge? i have the usb>sata 1.0t model. has anyone had the problem with this model? some said they disconnected the drive before updating - any info on this? is it related to the "turbo" usb stuff? is the problem with the drive hardware or the bridge hardware? will anybody tell us? and why are they doing the fix only for the japanese owners? there is a fix. is it a part we could install ourselves? would a different case help? i use this drive for time machine backup. it's got half a terabyte of data on it and i have no place else to put it. i want to use 10.5.7 and snow leopard is coming soon.

it's no wonder there was a big pile of these on sale at fry's if they were all discontinued. not very good of fry's or buffalo to not let us know that they were old and discontinued. to even get my mac to use this drive i had to find a pc to install a firmware fix (pc only) to keep it from staying asleep. tech support said there would be a mac patch but that was not true. why don't you just send all the mac users a free replacement for all the grief and ill will you are causing? mine said mac compatible. other usb drives continued working after the update - yours didn't.

they also said substituting the USB Mass Storage Class driver from 10.5.6 was not a good idea.

add me to the group that will never buy buffalo again.

scottgriz,

I'm glad you understand our position, and I agree with your assessment of "Regardless of who's fault it is, it certainly is Buffalo's problem." The problem was introduced by Apple's 10.5.7 update by some change in the USB Mass Storage Class driver, making it mostly "their fault", but as you say, it is our problem to handle, and we are close to making the fix available.

swalk3r,

As with any software issue, it can be nearly impossible to give an accurate estimate of when it will be resolved. If we gave a release date, it would probably be wrong, thus causing more frustration in our user base. We prefer to leave the issue at "We're working on it" until it has been resolved. I can tell you that we are close to releasing a fix, but I am unsure exactly when that will be.

a1mixer,

We've seen the issue with the HD-HBU2 series (USB -> IDE) as well as HD-HCU2 series (USB -> SATA) Drivestations. Which model number do you have?

The problem is not with the hardware at all, from what we can tell. The drives worked fine until Apple's 10.5.7 update, which apparently changed something in their USB Mass Storage Class driver, which caused the issue. The upcoming fix will install a patched kernel extension that was provided to us from Apple. Put simply, the drives are not defective, Apple's 10.5.7 update came with an incompatible driver.

Regardless of the issue at hand, please edit your post to remove your impolite wordings and harassing tone, or it will be removed.

as i said above, i have the usb>sata 1.0t - hd-u2 drivestation - can't be too many of those. i hope this time it will be a mac patch and not pc only. they may not be defective but they were discontinued. i bought mine only two months ago and you say they were discontinued two years ago. as for the patch, i followed apple instructions and went ahead to 10.5.7. i don't need it now.

Just to share - upgraded to Leopard yesterday, whacked in 10.5.7 update - Western Digital ext hard drive stopped working, neither of my Buffalo USB flash drives would register in Finder when attached.  Buffalo Support - not helpful, as others have already pointed out.

Western Digital have a download (WDMacTurboDrivers.zip) which is not specifically for overcoming 10.5.7 USB problems, but when I applied it not only did the WD problem go away but for some reason my Buffalo Flash Drives are now registering and accessible in Finder.

Hope the WD download may help some of you too!

Just for the record, isn't it the case that both parties agree to abide by certain standards. That is the following is logically possible: Apple says you need to make your drives *this* way if you want them to be mac-compatible. Buffalo makes some drives that don't comply, but they work anyway, so go figure. But lo and behold Apple updates their system, and now they don't work any more. Oops.

I'm *not* saying this is the case. I'm merely pointing out that it's logically possible Buffalo is entirely at fault here and not Apple. This gosh by golly if Apple hadn't updated their system all would be well, simply doesn't paint an accurate process of what goes on when drives like these are designed and then manufactured. It clearly *could* be all Buffalo's fault.

Of course this endless parsing over who is responsible from Buffalo makes one weary. A simple "sorry the drives don't work, we're on it" would have been far better customer service.

I understand where you're coming from, but the Mass Storage Class USB type is a standard to which the hardware and software vendors must comply. There is nothing different about Mac compatibility. The fact that the drives worked fine before, and that the Apple update caused the drives to not work, leads me to believe something was wrong in the updated USB MSC driver.

Still, you are right that it COULD be possibly Buffalo's fault, but this is highly unlikely. If Buffalo made USB hard drives that did not conform to the USB Mass Storage Class standard, they would most likely not work with a multitude of computer+operating system combinations... the problem would not be seen in just one specific software environment. As we've seen, the drives still work on Windows and other operating systems, as well as pre-OS10.5.7 Macs.

"Of course this endless parsing over who is responsible from Buffalomakes one weary."

I agree that arguing over whose fault it is for the issue is tiring. But keep in mind that the argument has been continued by BOTH sides.

"A simple "sorry the drives don't work, we're on it"would have been far better customer service."

We have stated as much in previous posts, and are close to releasing a fix. The original response from us was skeptical, for the reasons stated above. We've since accepted responsibility for releasing a fix for those customers affected, even though it's unlikely that our hardware caused the issue. I'm of the opinion that this is good customer service. I'm sincerely sorry if our responses were interpreted badly.

I'm just adding my name to the list of disgruntled Mac users so I get informed of the status of this situation. I have so many drives attached, I didn't know there was a problem until I went searching for a missing file. I realized that file was on a drive that was not showing up on the list. Taking inventory of my drives, I realized it was my Buffalo. My Buffalo was one of my favorite drives, therefore anything I knew I wanted to keep I would put on there. Ergo, it has a lot of important information on it, so I hope there is a fix soon. Luckily, I do have access to an unupdated Mac, and could have my friend bring it over to transfer files...Or I guess I could just Archive & Install back to the 10.5 that came with my computer.

Regardless, I was glad to see it wasn't "just me".

I'm very pleased with all my Buffalo products, so I hope I can access it through 10.5.7 soon.

Colin,

Despite my frustration with the ongoing reality of not being able to access my files on my Japanese 250GB HD, I do want to thank you for keeping us all up to date. I do hope that the fix will arrive swiftly as I have another computer that I need to transfer files to in the next few weeks.

Thanks again.

The update has been posted on our FTP site. The username/password is buffalo/buffalo.

This update patches Mac OS 10.5.7 to correct Apple's USB MSC driver behavior with older Buffalo Drivestation models. The symptoms occur after updating to 10.5.7. When the device is attached:

Instructions for update

1. Download "Buffalo Drivestation OS 10.5.7 Fix.zip", put it on your Desktop.
2. Double click on the file to extract it. It will create a folder named "Buffalo Drivestation OS 10.5.7 Fix". Open the folder.
3. Follow the instructions in the READ ME FIRST file to perform the update.

Contents of READ ME FIRST.txt:

This update patches Mac OS 10.5.7 to correct Apple's USB MSC driver behavior with older Buffalo Drivestation models. It will copy a kernel extension package to the /System/Library/Extensions directory, then notify the system of the change. BEFORE PERFORMING THE UPDATE, MAKE SURE YOU SAVE ANY OPEN DOCUMENTS. You must restart your computer afterwards to apply the fix.

This update is provided "AS IS" with no warranty of any kind. This update should not result in data loss, but Buffalo cannot be held liable for any problems that may result. Make sure your data is backed up before performing the update!

Installation Instructions:
1. Check the version of your Mac's OS:

Click on the Apple menu, then choose "About This Mac". The version will be listed under the Apple logo, under the words "Mac OS X".

IF THE VERSION DOES NOT SAY EXACTLY "10.5.7", DO NOT PERFORM THIS UPDATE, AND DO NOT FOLLOW ANY MORE OF THESE INSTRUCTIONS.

2. Check that your user account is an administrator, and that there is a set password for the account:

2a. Click on the Apple menu and choose "System Preferences". Click on "Accounts". Your username should be listed on the left side, underneath "My Account". If your user account is an administrator, it will say "Admin" directly underneath your username.

2b. Click on the "Set Password..." button on the top right side, and make sure there is a password set. If the password boxes are blank, enter in a new password.

3. Run the installation script:

3a. On the desktop, double click on the folder (not the .zip file!) named "Buffalo Drivestation OS 10.5.7 Fix". THE FOLDER MUST BE NAMED EXACTLY "Buffalo Drivestation OS 10.5.7 Fix", AND MUST BE LOCATED ON THE DESKTOP, OR THE UPDATE SCRIPT WILL NOT FUNCTION.

3b. Find the file named "RunAfterReading.bash". Hold the Control key while you click on "RunAfterReading.bash". Select "Open With", then choose "Other". Click on the "Utilities" folder, then choose "Terminal", and click "Open".

3c. The script will prompt you for your password. When it does, enter in your user's password. No characters will appear on the screen when you type in the password, this is normal. If the update completes successfully, please restart the computer. The issue will not be resolved until you restart.

Troubleshooting:
If you receive any errors, please leave the window open and contact technical support. We will need to see what the error messages were in order to diagnose the problem. If the update folder is named correctly, the script will also create a log file named logfile.txt in the folder.

Log in with username buffalo and password buffalo. I've tried it from several computers, and it works fine for me.

When I click the link, Safari tells me:

You don’t have permission to open this page.

You don’t have permission to view “Drivestation OS 10.5.7 Fix”.

can't get in with an ftp client either

It didn't work for me either in Safari but works fine if you load the link in Firefox.

I've just downloaded and everything is working now! It's taken a while to get this sorted but thankfully it's back to normal. Thanks for the fix.

We fixed the Safari issue, you should be able to connect and download the fix on Safari now.

The update worked great.  Back in business now with my HB 250 U2 on the IMac.  I did have to open a second terminal window to enter the password, then copy and paste it into the "fix" window, but it worked OK.

Thank you

Hmmm... that's odd. It appears that terminal isn't running the script at all. The top line once terminal opens should be something like:

/Users/username/Desktop/Buffalo\ Drivestation\ OS\ 10.5.7\ Fix/RunAfterReading.bash ; exit ;

Make sure your user is an admin, and that you're not trying to open the script from within terminal... you need to Option-Click on the RunAfterReading.bash script, choose Open With, then choose Utilities->Terminal.

Yep I am an Admin as I am the only one who uses this Macbook

and yes I do the option click and then run :smileysad:

ok... let's try it a different way. Open up the Terminal, then input the following command exactly as you see it (you can just copy/paste it into the terminal):

/Users/"$USER"/Desktop/Buffalo\ Drivestation\ OS\ 10.5.7\ Fix/RunAfterReading.bash

This update does NOT work for my Buffalo product.  I installed it immediately after I installed 10.5.7.  I waited SPECIFICALLY to find this supposed fix before updating to 10.5.7, and now I have an electronic whirling brick...

The Buffalo script ran sucessfully, but still no mounted drive...I'm not installing 10.5.7 on my other machines until this is fixed or I get a new drive and bye bye Buffalo.

Opened terminal from the applications page and pasted that in

Unknown-00-22-41-fc-0a-96:~ sladey234$

I got that

I couldn't get this patch to work using the bash file, but any advanced user that knows what they are doing can open up the bash file in Textedit and see the sudo commands that need to be executed.

Thank you for the fix, my HD-HB300U2 drive works now with my Mac OSX 10.5.7.

Well, it looks like I owe you guys an apology of sorts...it looks like it works after all, although it seems like something from the Windoze world...I followed the instructions to the letter...rebooted, and no go...that was when I posted my original posting...

Then like the user above, I decided to peek into  the script file and run the commands straight up...rebooted...again nothing.  Needless to say, you can imagine my frustration.

Then, out of some blind intervention, I decided to reboot a third time...this time without running any part of the script...lo and behold it worked...

I do appreciate your willingness to assist me and like I said...looks like I owe you an apology as well.  Humble pie is best served warm...LOL

hmmm... i wonder why that worked for me but not you... try:

bash /Users/"$USER"/Desktop/Buffalo\ Drivestation\ OS\ 10.5.7\ Fix/RunAfterReading.bash

And if that still doesn't work, open the terminal and run the following two commands, then paste the output:

cd /Users/"$USER"/Desktop/Buffalo\ Drivestation\ OS\ 10.5.7\ Fix

ls -l

Hi,

I also ran the update 3x, plus 3 reboots.

When I browse I find the drive.

The drive prompts for the password.

The drive lists the files.

BUT it will not mount. I still have no access to the drive.

Drive is Buffalo LinkStation Mini

Please help!

Gman

: Colin137 June 20, 2009, 11:52:33 AM

00gman,

As the Linkstation Mini is not a USB hard drive, this update has nothing to do with it. Please post a new thread with the problem you've been having so we can help you further. Make sure to include model number, firmware version, operating system, and the steps you've taken.

Everyone:

The Drivestation fix for Mac OS 10.5.7 is ONLY for Drivestations, not any of our NAS products. Please do not run the update if you do not have a Buffalo USB Drive.
