: problem with linkstation pro duo share and firmware updating
: mgushta December 09, 2008, 11:03:23 PM
   model: linkstation pro duo LSW10TGLR1
firmware: 3.05
network: linksys wrtc54g router, static IP assigned
computer: sony vaio vgn-sr190 running vista home premium SP1

issues: i have just completed installation and am currently encountering two issues with my recently purchased linkstation

1) i have been able to set up web access and sign into my account and see the shares that i've specified. unfortunately, no mapped drive appears in explorer and the NAS navigator returns the error "network routing can't be found" when i try to view shares. attempts to map a network drive within navigator produces the message "LinkStation has already been mapped or no "Share" folder exists". further, run -> \\ipaddress results in "network error: windows cannot access \\ipaddress". how can i map my drive?

2) i have downloaded the 3.08 firmware update but when i attempt to run LSUpdater.exe, windows tells me the program has stopped working and is closed. i have edited the INI file to include the [Special Flag] value and i have also tried editing my registry as per http://www.buffalotech.com/knowledgebase/users/kb.php?id=10010&category_id=0&sid2=
to no avail. how can update my firmware?

This sounds like a anti virus and firewall software issue.  Try turning every thing off, if that does not work then try mapping a drive in Safe mode with networking.

...sadly, neither option worked.

* disabled windows firewall and mcafee virus scan. launch NAS navigator -> view shares -> "network routing can't be found"

* safe mode ->  NAS navigator -> view shares -> "network routing can't be found"

i'm at a loss.

Try another computer with a direct connect, preferably one that is not part of a domain (to rule out AD security policy's)

i hooked the LS to another computer - a laptop running XP from a different network that has had a different LS model running perfectly - and it was fully recognized using navigator 2.11. i updated the firmware to 3.08 and then reconnected the LS to my vista machine. even in safe mode with networking, attempts to browse shares turns up the error "default share not found."

this is very unfortunate. i had reasonable hopes for this product but i appear to be getting stonewalled by vista.

I found this, let me know if it helps

Can't connect at all with Vista

Causes: Vista defaults to only send the more secure NTLMv2 protocol, which these NAS devices / Samba do not support.

Fixes: Go to Start -> Run -> "secpol.msc". Then goto Local Policies -> Security Options. Find "Network Security: LANManager authentication level". Change the setting from "Send NTLMv2response only" to "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security ifnegotiated". Save the setting and then reboot the computer.

Note: Buffalo has a download that does the same thing, but it involves messing with the registry by incorporating a ".reg"file. It is much better (and probably easier) to just use the abovesteps.

New Note: Seems some copies of Vista do not have"secpol.msc", probably the Home versions(Home Basic and Home Premium). These users will either need to use the download from Buffalo or go into their Registry editor.

Regedit instructions:
  1. Start->Search Bar or Run and enter "regedit"
  2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->SYSTEM->CurrentControlSet->Control->Lsa
  3. Right-click on "lmcompatibilitylevel" and choose Modify
  4. Set the Value Data to 2 (default is 3) and click OK
  5. Exit regedit and reboot
  6. Try to connect again

Can't login using a user name on a restricted share

Causes: Possibly due to cached passwords or different password/name resolution in Vista.

Fixes: Try connecting to "\\IPAddress" instead of"\\NASName". Also, try using "WorkgroupName\UserName","\\NASName\UserName", or "\\NASIPAddress\UserName".

Fixes: Try going into the command prompt and entering(without quotes) "NET USE \\[IP or NetBIOS name of NAS]\[folder that isbeing restricted] /d" and then try logging into the share again.

Memeo will not install in Vista

Causes: Some versions of Memeo do not work correctly in Vista.

Fixes: Have the customer download the following versionNotice .info domain: http://www.memeo.info/download/memeo/BT/Memeo.exe

Can't connect to a NAS by name, but IP address works, or can see and access share by \\ip_addr, attempt to map drive fails

Causes: Client for Microsoft Networks is installed but is not configured by default.

Fixes: Go to Control Panel->Network andInternet->Network and Sharing Center. Once Network and SharingCenter opens click on the 'Manage Network Connections' in the left handside of the 'Network and Sharing Center' window. Right-click on theadapter being used and choose Properties. Go to the Properties ofClient for Microsoft Networks and set the Name Service Provider toWindows Locator. It defaults to nothing in Vista, meaning no local nameresolution...

i just called tech support and talked to colin fir about 45 minutes regarding this issue and... we solved it.

simple solution: after cmd -> "net view \\ipaddress" returned an error stating that the workstation was not started, colin had me check services.msc and found out that "workstation" is a windows service. in my case, it was disabled. once enabled/started, i was able to view shares!

thanks colin!
