: Can I reformat HD-H1.OTGL/R5 with NTFS?
: Marina_M July 06, 2009, 01:09:04 AM

I have been backing up to my TeraStation using Retrospect, which is a wonderful backup program, but it doesn't do images. I recently purchased ShadowProtect to do image backups, but although ShadowProtect can do a full image backup to my TeraStation, it cannot create incremental backups. Searching their knowledgebase, I found that FAT systems are not supported for incrementals; only NTFS.

I am assuming that my TeraStation is formatted as FAT, therefore? Or is it possible that the RAID array is interfering with the backup?

If it is FAT, how can I reformat it as NTFS so ShadowProtect can also make incremental backups to it?

Any help or further information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

regards,

Marina

The unit is formatted XFS which is more or less a Linux filesystem and cannot be formatted to anything different do to the Linux kernel that runs in the Firmware. The issue is most likely not with the filesystem on the drives, in fact Windows cannot even read this filesystem without the help of third party software. When connecting to a NAS, Windows does not look at the format of the drive, it is looking only at the way it is accessing the drive (or the Transfer protocol) which is Samba (SMB). Probably what you want to look at is if that software can create incremental backups using SMB (Samba) Protocol.

Hope that helps, and makes sense!
