I have a Buffalo BR-X816U2 that won't play blu-ray discs anymore. I have tried several discs and windows doesn't recognize the disc. It will
play DVDs and CDs without a problem. It will record blu-ray discs.

Windows by itself wont play blu rays. You must use a software like cyberlink or nero that have blu ray support.
I have several blu-ray players - Cyberlink, Nero, BSPlayer Pro, among others but as I sais earlier windows does not recognize the disk. When I insert the disk and in windows explorer I click on my O:\ drive (Buffalo drive), I get an error from windows. "Windows cannot read from the disk. The disk might be corrupted, or it could be using a format that is not compatible with windows." I used to be able to read from the drive but now I can't. I can burn blu-ray discs without a problem, but can't read them afterwards. They all work fine in my Samsung Blu-ray Player, but it's not for my PC. The O:\ drive also changes from a DVD-ROM drive to CD Drive after inserting the blu-ray disc.
You may want to go to the device manager and uninstall the blu ray player. It could be corrupt drivers. Once its uninstalled, use the cd to reinstall it.
