: a usb3 hard drive enclosure is slower with the Buffalo ExpressCard than usb2!
: braver July 29, 2010, 11:52:05 PM

I've got the usb3 ExpressCard for my MacBook Pro, and connect a SIIG usb3 enclosure with a Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM drive.  It takes about 20 seconds to transfer a 1 GB file, and only 10 seconds if I hook it up directly to the MacBook's own usb2 port!  I did install the drivers off the CD, the ExpressCard is recognized as NEC usb3 hub.  WHo's to blame, what to fix?

In fact, I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate on the MacBook Pro.  For larger files, I am able to get about 2x speedup when the transfer starts, but then it quickly decelerates to 1.5x and less, compared to usb2...  Is there anything we are supposed to do for the ExpressCard and enclosure?  E.g., when connecting the Buffalo Blu-ray burner, I was asked to enable TurboUSB, which I did, and now the burner is showing under TurboUSB in the device manager.  Is there anything like that for a usb3 hard drive from SIIG, or it's only a Buffalo-Buffalo thing?

Virtual environments are going to yield different results than what was tested to achieve our advertised specs.  Sounds like the lag time you're experiencing is normal although I can't confirm that because as davo said this device is not supported with Mac or virtual environs of compatible OSes.

He didn't say whether he was running under a virtual product or in boot camp. If he was running under boot camp, he would have been running native, and the speeds should have been good.
