: Slow boot time w/1TB eSata Buffalo drive & Vista x64
: mark_peterson October 10, 2008, 03:09:56 PM

I've attached a Buffalo 1TB eSata drive to my desktop, and now Vista (64-bit) takes quite a bit longer to boot - probably an extra 2 minutes or so.

I've detached the drive to verify that the eSata drive was causing the problem, and the slow boot time went away.

This isn't a HUGE deal, but it is annoying.  I'm guessing Vista is running some sort of disk check or something which is taking the extra time.  Anyone know of a tweak to speed things up again?

Thanks!

Mark

Make sure the hard drive is formatted in to NTFS, also make sure you have the latest chipset drivers for your motherboard for your version of Vista.

Drive is already formatted NTFS.  Chipset drivers are up-to-date as well.  Any other ideas, or am I stuck with the slow boot?  I can live with it - it's just mildly annoying when I do have to reboot.

Other then finding an updated ESATA driver for your operating system, I will have to run some tests to figure out another solution.

System is a Dell Optiplex 755 w/Vista x64.  8 GB of RAM w/an Intel Core2 Quad CPU - Q6700.  Obviously, it's an Intel chipset.  Device manager an Intel ICH9 SATA AHCI controller - guess that controls the eSATA drive as well.

It sounds like the drive is being accessed during the boot process - I can hear several faint clicking noises coming from the drive.  I went ahead and configured the BIOS to ignore the eSATA drive during the boot process.  Didn't think that would make much difference (it didn't), since the problem seems to occur after BIOS post and during the very beginning of the Vista boot process.  I get a blinking cursor in the upper left corner for 20-30 seconds, then a completely black screen for about a minute, then the Vista boot screen finally appears.

For what it's worth...
