: AirStation Turbo G Ethernet converter. SSID problem
: jtapscot January 05, 2009, 04:54:24 PM

I have an Airstation Turbo G Ethernet converter. It has communicated well for years with my Linksis BEFW11S4 wireless router using no WEP encryption at all. I finally decided to start using encryption. I was able to configure everything well enough, but when ever I configure the router to stop broadcasting the SSID the Airstation Ethernet converter stops working for me. My other wireless devices on the network continue to work just fine. I could leave the SSID broadcast on, but Linksis recommends disabling it for increased security.

Just a couple of facts. The Linksys router is 802.11B. One more thing: the setup software for the Buffalo ethernet converter Made me enter the encryption key as 128 bit even though I am using 64 bit encryption. It would not accept a ten digit key if I left it in the 64 bit. Don't know if this has anything to do with anything or not.

Any suggestions??

Disabling the SSID broadcast provides an almost negligable increasein security, as that technique is easily defeated. WEP security isreally insecure as well; if your router supports WPA-PSK (also calledTKIP), use that instead.

As for the Ethernet Converter, when setting up WEP, try putting the info into the Advanced section, asthe front page only accepts ASCII coded WEP keys.
